I noticed a couple of Colorado guys on their XC roster. Aren't these the sort of local under-the-radar guys that Wetmore built CU's dominance around? Have the Buffs lost their recruiting edge?

Williams was never under the radar. He was a relatively high-mileage guy who ran 9:06 at altitude and like 8:51 for the full two-mile at the Nike meet. Under-the-radar is like a sub-9:30 guy at altitude (covert it to mid 9:10s) who runs it off 40-50 miles per week. Lots of those guys with major upside. Brent Vaughn was an anomaly... supposedly didn't do high miles, holds the state record at 9:05, which is ridiculous, and ran 8:45 at Arcadia. But, Wetmore is, no doubt, not getting all the in-state talent anymore.

Under the radar is Aaron Braun, a 4:24 guy for 1600 at altitude who wound up at Adams St., ran like 13:36, and continues to compete at a high level as a professional. Two years ago, I bet Adams would've beaten CU at nationals had they raced in the same race at the END of the year.

wherever theyre coming from, it seems like OU has surpassed the mighty buffaloes of old. itll be interesting to see the ou-osu "big 12" battles from here on out since cu is leaving for the pac 10

osu might have to start caring about all three seasons or ou will become the premiere program in the conference

Just curious... Why is that Indiana gets so much hell for putting up good times, but when another good team does it that team immediately starts getting compared to the national champions? Hubers 13:44, Poore 13:45, Mayhew 13:58, which doesn't include Bayer who has run 13:45 outdoors. Just doesn't make sense. I am in no way taking anything away from Oklahoma because they have definitely out-shined a lot of teams "prestigious" distance teams this season, but what is the difference between them and an IU?

I guess it's that the IU guys started putting up those great times almost two months ago. People were concerned they wouldn't be able to hold their top form through Nationals. So far, so good, but we're not at Nationals yet.

Yes, but Oklahoma only ran the times they ran two weeks later if my memory serves me correct.

What makes Oklahoma a bigger story is that they were terrible just a few seasons ago and now they are turning heads. Oklahoma was about as good as a weak mid-major conference team before Smith got there, now they are rounding into one of the top teams in the country.

The coaches make a huge difference. Just like nobody would question Vin's guys if they were putting up great times now, nobody should question Martin Smith's. Ron Helmer on the other hand, notoriously runs his athletes into the ground and has been known to have the guys peak for a time trial in February. How many laps on the track did Hubers and Bayer run last weekend at conference?

IU also has more of a tradition/history with cross country and distance events. They have had a number of Olympians and NCAA champions.

OU has come a heck of a long way from the days of steve baker. they have had some standouts along the way, however. a little known fact is that filbert bayi came very close to attending oklahoma in the 70's.
