Li, Li, Li. You want to change of conversation. I promise I don´t run away from Lydiard ridiculous hard.
3 more things. But first, nothing is opposed to Lydiard. Might be progress, some steps further from what´s the Lydiard training, because distance training deals with the same variables.
1-better aerobics get it from different volume mileage approach.
2-better anaerobic get it from different intensity approach
3- different season periodization.
In synthesis. The Li training is tailed for best performances. In fact I don´t remember one Lydiard runner that did what Lagat did.
I'm actually more interested in this one-must be important that he posted it twice.
So you are saying there is a need to develop aerobic capacity in Li/Lagat method. How would they suggest to attain it? 120 miles a week of running? Or 80 miles a week of running? or do they suggest doing some intervals to develop aerobic capacity?
And then to develop better anaerobic capacity next. How would they do it? By LSD? Tempo run? Or simply good old intervals? You say different intensity. Harder or easier? What time does Lagat do his 400 repeats in? 60 seconds or 56 seconds or 72 seconds?
Finally, so they do periodization.... How do they do it differently? Peak 5 times a year? Or peak in 12 weeks instead of 24 weeks?
In the context of developing aerobic capacity, then develop anaerobic capacity, all the while peaking for specific race (that's how I understand "periodization" means), how is it so different from Lydiard? Boy, as a matter of fact, I didn't know any specifics about Li/Lagat training! Thanks for shedding some light. It actually sounds awfully like Lydiard!!
I sincerely hope we get to hear dozens more runners Dr. Li trains to win World Championships and Olympics and set world record, and his method influence hundreds more around the world for the next several decades to come-just like Lydiard's did.
