I'd actually recommend an anthology of Charles Bukowski's which I think is just called "The Bukowski Reader." While I don't usually approve of this kind of thing or think it's often done well, this anthology pulls stuff from all of his other books and assembles it in a coherent chronological form that's actually better than any of his individual books. And it's an extremely enjoyable read.
