I need time to recover and I am really sorry for my Japanese fans, but I will come back to Tokyo, unfortunately not this weekend.
I am training in the countryside of Ethiopia and fell, that happens more often but this time with my knee on a stone. Bad, bad luck for me.
I am really disappointed that I have to withdraw from Tokyo Marathon, I was feeling great in training.

Kind of disappointing news given Haile's recent history; I hope he still makes a comeback.
Haile G out of Tokyo

I've fallen and I can't get up! -
It does seem that his body is more fragile than it used to be, despite that he's feeling in good shape. Come back soon Haile!
-
I fell this winter tripping up over something in the road and banged my knee on the pavement. It gave me some crazy bursitis. It had nothing to do with being fragile. Hope he gets well soon.
-
thats too bad, but atleast the guy tells us whats wrong with him. people arent even sure if bekele is alive.
-
But was it bad enough that you would drop out of a marathon a few weeks later?

Why would you waste an opportunity racing a marathon when you know that you are going to miss training in the crucial weeks leading up to the race? He is there to win it, not complete it like 95% of people that run marathons.
-
All this publicity about "the best runner in the world" having knee injuries gives some credibility to the old myth that "running ruins your knees." I sure hope he can bounce back and have at least one more amazing marathon before the end of his running career.
-
I tripped over a root a couple of yrs. back and banged my kneecap hard on the drought hardened ground. I had pain in that knee for six weeks, and running races was out of the question. Falls can do serious damage.

This just in, Haile G is old.

Depends on how fast he was running. Think about the impact at his speed. I've fallen during a race and during an easy run. Obviously, during the race I was running faster and felt the impact a lot more versus falling during a regular easy run. Granted, I am just a hobby jogger.
I think for an elite or a fast runner who runs those paces and fall would have a much greater impact/injury, am I not correct? -
He is 38 in a few days .That is OVER THE HILL? No way.He will be back.

Defending champ Fujiwara is out too, with a fever. Also last year's Lake Biwa runner-up Sato, who is injured.
-
I believe that we saw the end of Geb in New York.
The retirement/unretirement/denial of NY Times article/, was beyond bizarre. I was equally shocked to hear that he was going to run Tokyo. Now I get it. He is done. -

Someone forgot that he lives in Ethiopia. -
I think that he is making an excuse that he is injured. He doesn't want to lose a race because he has too much pride. He doesn't want to run a race unless he is certain he can win.
