"The kenyans don't ALL train together. (see Canova on this and the drawbacks of training under the Kenyan camps all together).
The Ethiopians have a different mindset, and nothing says that they ALL train together either - some may but not all of them.
The Arkansas guys did well, but so have other College programs (Villanova/Oregon in their day). That's just part of the College scene, but doesn't make it the "right" way to do things.
As Malmo says, pushing is one thing, but having EVERYONE in the same group (as the one poster suggested) is a recipe for disaster. Rupp and Farah may work well since they compete for different countries (much like Kim McDonald with Komen/Kennedy). The Brits in the '80's all trained separately yet managed to win Olympic medals and break world records - it can be done. That was feeding OFF each other, and shows that there are different ways to achieve success as well. Mamede and Lopes were among the best 10000m runners in the early 1980's, had the same coach but (according to posts by Antonio Cabral) had different training programs and rarely did the same workout together as CL was a ST runner and FM a FT one.
The attitude that ALL the best runners should train together is really an immature understanding of individual development. Shorter and Rodgers were different types of runners who benefitted from their own training situations, but would likely have had problems doing everything together. The Wisco guys have come under Jerry from the College scene, it will be interesting to see what happens if/when others join from other programs and how easy it would be to mesh with current athletes. Easy to take on the women (Flanagan and Koll) as this is all new to Jerry, and Flanagan is already proven (under Cook), so that isn't such a stretch."
-you've got your mind made up. No matter what is said, you will attempt to rationalize or refute it. I completely respect your opinion. However, if you look at the Kenyan training groups (the 3 in iten, the loose one in Nairobi, and the main one in eldoret), you will see exactly what I'm referring to. These guys get together and rise to great heights. Further, there is a whole stable of Ethiopians that train together with bekele or haile (not together with both, however, though occasionally). How do I know this? Because I've seen it with my own eyes. Look at the enclave with steve and the boys- though holman did a fair amount of his running solo. Look at the aforementioned hogs. Look at el gerrouj's old group- this is where ramzi, drugs or not, rose from. Iron sharpens iron. Again, I respect your personal opinion on a subject, but find it highly disrespectful when you refer to my "immature understanding". I think you'd be shocked
to know who I am. That's the beauty of an anonymous message board, however. Unfortunately, after having seen it all and done it all, I see so much false information and completely ridiculous comments on this board,
that sometimes it is hard to stomach. You seem knowledgeable, and I'm sure you would agree.
