It just occurred to me that those quotes are all related.
Al Sal loves his gadgets and messing with people's stride. Jerry's training has always seemed very old school - the secret is there is no secret kind of thing. In this way, Al Sal and Jerry don't really match up. Magness on the other hand matches up well with Al Sal.
You're right on the mark here, but once again, in the Nike world, where is the grownup supervision?
The gadget obsession is a weakness, not a strength. Building a team with like-minded people with the same weaknesses is foolish. The mantra of all successful organizations is "exploits your strengths, mitigate your weaknesses." Assemble a team with complementary strengths.
For as long as I can remember, Alberto has always had a weakness for gimmicks and fads. Heck, he even once sold his interest in a restaurant so that he could go on a pilgrimage to Yugoslavia because some teenage pranksters said they saw an apparition of the Virgin Mary on a pizza box.
But if you ever talk to him directly about the gimmicks he quickly changes the subject to what he does right - and it's straightforward roll up your sleeves get to work training. There's nothing new there.
The last person that Alberto needs is Magness. Here is an obsessive running geek who ran a 4:01 mile in high school, who struggled for years never to come close to that again, running closer to 4:10 miles than 4:01, and really struggling to hit 3:47s. Magness was a kid you had to root for, if not just to get the monkey off his back, he was like Wile E Coyote of running chasing the Roadrunner (his own 4:01 from hs). No matter what, he was going to blow himself up with that Acme time bomb, or get smashed on the head by that Acme anvil, or some other Acme gimmick.
Even a broken clock get's it right twice a day. In 5 years, Magness has never got it right even once. Judging by the tautological fog that is written on his website, it's not difficult to figure who is responsible for his consistent pattern of failure.
