I emailed the brojos to let them know. Forgive my computer illiteracy, but does anyone know how big a deal this is? Are we risking our computers just by browsing the forum or is it OK as long as you don't click through the google warning?
Truthfully, there are several mainstream web pages that have been infected by malware in the past. As a result, there is always a certain level of risk involved. However, it's fairly easy to mitigate that level of risk, most importantly:
- Don't surf the Internet with a profile that has full admin privileges.
- Utilize some type of antivirus/malware protection application. AVG, Avast, and Microsoft themselves all provide viable options that are free of charge.
- As you said yourself, heed any warnings that you see.
Additionally, ensure that your third-party applications are up-to-date. Exploiting PDF files has been one of the more popular web-based threats over the last few years, so make sure that you keep your Adobe Reader updated. Version 10.x is quite a bit more secure than prior verions.
Also, Java Runtime Environment web exploits are rather common. Your web browser already has Java script support baked right in, so stop to consider whether you actually need to have Jave RE installed on your computer. Most people don't really need it.
Hope that helps out a bit!
