also i mean for recreational/competitive runners. so 14+ up for 5k.
NYRRC isn't just a running club. It sponsors races and other things. Among other reasons, people become members because of cheaper race admission and because it can help with entry to the NYC Marathon. How many local NYC club members (CPTC, Warren St, etc) are also NYRRC members? I bet the answer is "a lot" and that there really isn't anything comparable.
In Norcal I think the closest answer is the PAUSATF. Lots of clubs sitting under that one umbrella organization. For example, the NYRRC has this:
http://www.nyrr.org/resources/clubs/clubs_points.asp
whereas PAUSATF has this type of thing:
http://www.pausatf.org/data/2010/RRTeamStand2010.html
It's more of a local club vs regional association thing, and of course the regional associations will have more members.
The PAUSATF is in no way a club, it is a USATF region with a lot of completely separate clubs. I believe that the largest club in NorCal is Tamalpa, which is based in Marin County, with around 650 members. Gotta think there is a larger club in the LA or San Diego area.
well from the link it seems like there is a few good running club in the Sacramento and bay area, with River city, WVTC, and Asic Aggies for the nor cal divisions.
any idea on the so cal area. I be interested to see the orange county area in comparison to san diego county.
So Cal USATF dwarfs any club, USATF chapter, or shoe supplier. The membership alone is a significant chunk of the total USATF. There's many outdoor all comers meets every weekend of the winter, and thousands of road races, ultras, marathons, age group, high school, elite t&f, etc. all year along. So Cal USATF is so huge there are hundreds of people who have been involved with So Cal USATF for 50 years whom I have never laid eyes on nor met and I've been involved for 50 years myself. The proudest part of So Cal USATF is that we have produced the most Olympic, World Championships, and major Road Race medalists, the two greatest NCAA DI T&F programs, and we have hosted the Summer Olympic Games twice, in 1932 and 1984. And let me tell you, every time we won a medal, 1,000s of officials, age group, h.s., college coaches who brought up that kid cried a million tears of joy. There's too many of our So Cal USATF kids who have medalled to list here. You know who they are.

Well, I guess it depends on the definition . If what constitutes being a club is having your runners registered with an association - Tamalpa is not nearly 650 members (
http://www.pausatf.org/indexclubsaa.php
).
Lot's of clubs can claim significant numbers if they count everyone that happen to wear a singlet. But, if you count how many truly contribute scoring for a club - the numbers are lower for most clubs.

I didn't know the Great Rift Valley was in Southern California. Interesting.
ashley,
The OP provided the definition: "also i mean for recreational/competitive runners. so 14+ up for 5k". The OP didn't say anything about members having USATF membership or any other qualifications. I think you'll find that the bulk of members of all the larger clubs is made up of people who don't belong to their association.
Elite clubs are all about racing, but large clubs are mostly fitness and socially oriented with a much smaller core group of competitive racers.

Would you like to address any specific clubs?
That's right. SOCALUSATF has 1,000s of WC and Oly medals, Meb, Deena, included. None of the other clubs can be mentioned. It's ridiculous.
It's hard to pick the best piece hyperbole from So Cal USATF's intentionally over-the-top post, but I think this is my favorite:
"there are hundreds of people who have been involved with So Cal USATF for 50 years whom I have never laid eyes on nor met and I've been involved for 50 years myself."
Nice parody post So Cal USATF!
