This sounds pretty bad. The article I read said that their probably are fatalities, but it didn't give any clue about how many. Hopefully everyone makes it through this okay.
Three replies and no "Rupp certified" jokes yet? You guys are slipping.
Maybe it's that Rupp has run a very challenging XC race and two fast 5000m races already in 2011, while other U.S. elites have raced less, and in less challenging circumstances. People might be facing the reality that he's a tough competitor.

I hope so, because he is, but I doubt it given this board.

TRUTH
There is no way this race is going to be held in Christchurch now. So far the death toll has reached 65 and is expected to rise.
What happened is horrific there but as far as running goes, I'm kind of glad that he might not be not running the 10K. He is just not quite ready yet to take down that record! He's probably in the best shape of his life but he seems to still be lacking that little extra bit of closing speed and power needed to go below 27 minutes. If he does run, I predict he will go somewhere around 27:04 -10. It would be an amazing effort nevertheless, but I think a couple of more weeks of intense training with Mo, would help him bridge the gap!
OK you know-it-all f***tard! Get a life and write something that makes sense!!
Ya, because a couple of weeks is all it takes to get into better 10k shape....

If that earthquake was bad enough, he may have another challenging cross country race this weekend.

ZING!
why is his closing speed so critical?? The fitness to run 64/65 sec laps for 25 laps is probably more important don't ya think? Rupp has to be close to 10k PR shape (27:10), the conditions will likely play a part in whether he does or not.
I was curious who was or is going to do the pace setting for him. Going sub 27 is getting pretty damn good even by East African standards. Or was this a race where some elite East African runners were going to be in it and Rupp was going to tag along with them?
Maybe they can still put it together. When was the race suppose to be? Maybe if the NZ gov't was reminded that he was going for an American record and a WC and Olympic A qualifer they would set something up for him. Maybe the race could be moved to Auckland.

rupp already has the worlds 10k qualifier as times from 2010 count for the 10k.
the earliest anyone can get an olympic 10k qualifier is may 1st 2011.
for some reason i dont think the NZ government is thinking about an american who wants to run in circles 25 times faster than any american ever has. maybe the NZ government thinks of rupps running as a low priority right now.
Wrong!!!

His 10k time from last year does not count
