Going to San Francisco in early August. Would like to hear suggestions on where to stay. I've already seen the threads on here about local attractions. Leaning towards staying in Union Square, and would like to keep it under 150 a night. Thanks.

I live near SF and stay in town frequently. If price and location are your main considerations, then using priceline is likely your best bet. Use http://biddingfortravel.yuku.com/ to find what people are paying and then use "name your own price" on priceline with the area set to union square. You can almost certainly get a 4 star hotel for well under $150. At under $150 the hotels are going to be fine, but nothing special, you aren't going to be staying at the Four Seasons for $150. If you want to learn more specific about hotels I recommend Trip Advisor.
Only stayed there once, in the financial district at the Hyatt Regency. The hotel was decent, but a little more than $150/night. The convenience was that every mode of public transportation stopped within a block of the hotel so getting to any part of town was a breeze.
Make sure you rent a bike a ride north across the golden gate to sausalito and catch a ferry back. That was the highlight of the trip. Although, a three piece set at a nice jazz club, some fine meals, riding the street car named desire and hanging off the side the trolleys were also memorable.
Hotel Nikko. You will not regret it. The ad even popped up at the bottom of the thread.

Funny you should pint that out. The same ad also has the Best Western Hotel California. I've stayed there on several occasions. It's at Geary & Jones. Walk east on Geary and your're right at Union Square. Walk west on Geary a few blocks and then south and you're in the heart of the Tenderloin where you'll witness the real "charm" of authentic S.F.
We vacationed a few years ago and stayed in Belmont about 30 minutes away and only paid about 40 a night for a Days inn. It is now called Hillside Lodge, but it was nice, easy to get to, and CHEAP. We didn't use it but the train was very close that went right to San Francisco.
Hotel Kabuki in Japantown is very nice and a good deal for what you get, especially if you're interested in the Japanese restaurants and stores in stuff in the neighborhood. You should be able to get a room for well under $150.
