Last weekend I was out surveying the big loop of a 50K course I was planning on running when about two miles from the finish (and my car), I suddenly had severe pain on the top part of my left foot. When I say sudden I mean it, there were no aches or pains in the days leading up to the run. Nor had there been any pain throughout the run. Finally, I don't feel like I did any trauma to the foot. I did not step funny, it just suddenly hurt.
Flexing my foot felt terrible. So after taking a few minutes to realize I had hurt something, I limped the two miles back home. By the time I sat down, stretched a bit, and had some lunch I could hardly walk. A week later its still painful to walk.
Some background. I had been running high mileage (90-100 miles) for the past couple months, but that is usual for me and there was nothing aggressive about my build-up. What was different was that I had strained a muscle in my glut which forced me to cross train for about 8 days. I had been back running for about a week when disaster struck.
I'm pretty convinced that I have a stress fracture. I got an x-ray, but doubt it will present anything, but man this hurts like a mother. There is swelling in the foot and localized pain I can trigger with my finger. I'm certainly not running at the moment and am scared to even jump on a spin bike. I am seeing a PT who is very competent and who was wary that it might be a fracture.
My question is whether one can create a stress fracture in 2.5 hours of running? This seems different from the usual trajectory of this injury. I'm curious if anyone else has had a sudden onset stress fracture. I'd also appreciate any additional advice in terms of treatment. Any thoughts on an affordable boot?
Thanks.
