Hey all. Hope that life finds you well. For many of us, it's been a joy to be able to run outside in cooperative weather this past week. Although it seems the northern midwest (and soon to be northeast) are getting yet another blast of wintry mix...ain't life grand!
Had a good week, hitting 50 miles for the first time since who knows when. Got 7 runs in over 6 of the days. Because of time constraints during the week, any "speed" work that I did was abbreviated, but did manage a bit of speed work MWF on the indoor track. The other days were outside. Notable speed work included an acceleration 2 mile that started at about a 7 minute pace that finished at about a 5 minute pace. The second mile averaged out to 5:21, so that was encouraging. On Friday, I did 2.5 miles of 0.4 mi (2 laps) on, 0.1 mi (1/2-lap) jog recovery. The "on" part was done a 3-5k pace, and the jog lasted about 45-50 seconds typically. Even with the jog recovery, I managed the five reps in under 15 minutes, which surprised me, as it didn't totally drain me. Saturday, I ran twice, an easy 8 miles in the morning, in which I stopped every 2 miles and stretched my hip mercilessly, followed by 5 miles in the afternoon done at a bit harder pace, not really tempo, but comfortably harder (about 6:30 pace). All-in-all, it was a good week, in which the hip is definitely responding to more aggressive measures, probably just as your (NLS) ART guy would have expected, no?
Topic: Supplements? As we get older, I'm reminded that our bodies don't work, heal, and replenish quite as they once did. I've always been a pretty hearty eater, so I've never worried much about whether I was getting enough of the right nutrients. I've pledged to start cutting back, so I've started to think about whether I'm getting all those other trace elements and compounds that various parts of our bodies need. In addition, I'm also concerned about things like joint flexibility and range of motion, that seem to deteriorate with age. So it leads me to wonder whether people generally in our age category take supplements, and if so, which ones, and do you take them because you know they work, or just because it seems like a good idea?
As usual, I love to hear your stories and what's generally going on (whether it's busy, banal or bizarre.)
Post 'em up!!
