Also botched the women's 10k a few years ago...counted the laps wrong.

5:04 and 37th is a long way form getting in and 3:47at the 1200 mark is not getting the job done either.

He is saying that a 5:04 would be the 37th ranked time for nationals list in D2. They passed from 1200-1400 in 32 seconds, at 4:19. they couldve had one lap in their at 37 seconds in order to make it. And they were easily under that pace.

If the bell ringer hadn't screwed up, if the girls would have been able to count, then they would both, Smith and Puga, be heading to nationals.

Her season best is 5:04. She is 37th on the D2 list. It will take 4:56 to get in. If she was 3:47 at 1200 that is about 5:03 pace at best. So the miss counting of laps did not cost her a trip to nationals.

It cost them at least 10 seconds. They stood for a good 5 or 7, then had to jog the final lap.

This is unfortunate, but pretty insignificant compared to the fact that one of the athletes in the conference was found dead in his apartment yesterday morning:

Flip the lap counter when the leader comes by, GNAC. Problem solved.

The sad part is, the bulk of this crew(the Boise State officials) will be working the D-I nationals meet in a year. I hope they can get it together or it could be rough times for the athletes. On a related note, when I lived there, I attended many WAC indoor meets and never saw any huge mistakes from this crew like I observed on the live feed yesterday. I wonder what the difference is?

Racing a mile that hard, on a track that takes 8 laps to do it, you seriously think that they wouldn't trust the person ringing the bell to be able to have a better idea of what lap they are on? They probably had a feeling for what lap they were on, but when you hear that bell ring, it's not a bad decision to realize that while you're concentrating so hard on working through fatigue, that you may have counted wrong.

How long has it been since you raced hard? In order to get the best performance out of yourself, you have to let officials and volunteers carry some of the weight.

If you're racing hard enough, you shouldn't be able to count to eight!

My last hard race was a 3k. That is 15 laps. I was able to keep track. Not that hard.

I was at a meet this winter for the first time. In my two days there I saw meet officials tell the runner in the lead that he had two laps to go (when he only had 1), when the rest of the field came by they were telling them 1 lap to go. No bell, no nothing. Pretty disappointing for the lead runner.

Same meet. Saw them leave a runner off of the results because they couldn't tell if his hip number was an 8 or a 3. By simple deduction, should have been able to figure it out.
