I'm looking into possibly doing a half marathon about 5 weeks out. Can anyone offer any good workouts that could predict a goal half marathon pace?
2 X 5k, 12 X 800m??? I'd rather not enter any shorter distances races to test fitness.
Thanks

Haha 12 by 800 definitely will not predict your half marathon time well. maybe 2 by 5k.
for me half marathon pace is pretty easy to get to know especially if you are on the slow twitch side and have a fair amount of endurance..
for me i did an 8 mile tempo run at about 10 to 15 seconds slower than my half pace. i didnt know it at the time, but after the run i could pretty well predict that i easily could have sped up at the pace i was going and finished off another 5 miles. So with that knowledge i knew i could probably keep up a pace 10 to 15 secs faster at race effort and with racing flats on.
So i recommend doing a long tempo run and getting a sense of how the pace feels. if you are doing something like 7 or 8 miles you should be able to get a sense of what you should shoot for on race day
thanks. I got the 12 X 800 from a previous thread.
Any idea if it makes any difference if I plan on tapering for the race? I've been doing about 85-95 mile weeks for a couple of months now so I haven't been running my tempo runs or interval workouts on fresh legs.
Most of my 4-5 mile tempo runs are done at around 6:00-6:10 pace but on fairly higher volume that I've been used to running. Is it realistic to set a goal for a half-marathon pace of around 5:50 with a taper and about a month of speed work?
