I am the senior captain of my track team and the defending state champion in the mile, but there is a very talented sophomore on the team who if he stays healthy and keeps his mind right may not only win state but also set the state record. I am fine with the fact that he may be more talented than me and the possibility of him wiining state and I want to do all that I can to help him get faster, because that will only push me to run faster, but he has a huge chip on his shoulders thats making it vey difficult. He refuses to do what the coach and I ask him to do, because he says that the coach is not a distance runner and that if he had not been injured last year he would have won state and he should be the captain. Like I said I want him to do well and reach his potential, but I also need to put him in his place so that he will listen and do what is necessary to reach his potential rather than thinking he can just show up and win. Even if he is talented enough to just show up and win, which he may be, without working at it he will never reach his potential and part of my job as captain is to help him maximize his potential. Any suggestions?
