He already has the 1500m, 3000m, 5000m outdoor U.S records. Does he have the ability to run in the 26:50's?

Yes, but that doesn't mean he will.
But if he trained and focused on it?
Yes but that doesnt mean he will.
He is capable of breaking the record, what more did you want the first person who replied to say?
He can be in 26:30 shape, but doesn't mean he will run it. He might only run 27:10 if it is tactical...
so once again
Yes but that doesn't mean he will.
I think he can get it.

good for you.
Yes Bernard is definitely capable of breaking the 10000m AR; however, as posters said before being capable doesn't mean he will break the record. He has hinted that he will give the 10000m a shot after the 2012 Olympics and most likely in 2013; however, by then will it be too late?
so a 40 year old kenyan is breaking all the american records...?
really?! wrote:

Well, not the 10,000...but I bet he could.

He runs with no passion or drive, and is one of the most boring runners that I've ever seen.
So I'm not really interested in anything that he does.
No passion or drive? hahahaha. Thanks for the laugh. I sure El g and Bekele beg to differ.

what idiot above views as lack of passion or drive...
to someone who knows anything about distance running is actually a wealth of intelligence, race savvy, and composure
that said I believe the current US record represents about the peak of lagat's capabilities at 10,000 but before he attempts it rupp, ritz, or solinsky will take it down further to where he can't get it (low 26:50s or high 26:40s)

so you are saying lagat is not as good a runner as rupp, ritz and solinsky lol.
no I am saying they are all capable of faster 10,000 times than he is
reading comprehension...
He can break it under these circumstances:
- he races at stanford cardinal invite
- he f*cks Matt Damon the morning of the race.

no they are not.
5k and 10k go hand in hand, the one who is better at 5k will almost always be better at 10k.

for a 1500-5000 guy spending a few years focusing on the 5000 at the end of his career, this is not even close to true
they year lagat beat bekele at 5000, you think he takes him at 10,000 as well?
No I dont think so. Have you seen all Bekele's 10,000 races? They are not even close. He doesn't just win, he crushes his opponents. Be well!
Someone mentioned he's a relatively low mileage (60-70 mpw) guy, so it wouldn't be as smooth a jump for him.

not from last year he doesn't
trying :
http://www.jundo.co.uk/he went 3'32/12'54 ->27'05.6
& that assumes his endurance lasted "perfectly" to 10k off 1500/5k training - it woudn't
you coud argue his 12'54 shouda been more like 12'52 as it was a slack 4th km
3'32/12'52 ->26'59.3
still unlikely to break 27'00
if he wants to do it, he needs to turn to 5k/10k training & thus he woud lose 1500 speed but hopefully compensating for this with better endurance so, lets say his 5k remains at 12'52 but his 1500 is now 3'33/3'34
12'52 with
3'33 ->26'55.4
3'34 ->26'51.6
realistically, he won't do it until he bites the bullet & gives up the 1500
( albeit if he got down to 12'50 with 3'32 ->
26'53.0
but this scenario is doubtful )
