It doesn't seem like you are feeling up a girl when racing her in track. Wrestling a girl is really, really uncomfortable.
I wrestled a girl when I was a freshman in HS. She was a senior. I pinned her in 17 seconds.
If you win: "Wow, why did you beat a girl? That's not a real state championship because you beat a girl"
If you lose: "Well, you lost to a girl, so you must really suck."
Maybe he thought he would lose and therefor thought it would be better to forfeit under the notion that he didn't want to wrestle a girl.

So you are saying it is comfortable to be feeling up the guys while wrestling?
I also wrestled a girl in high school. I sure didn't forfeit, but its kind of a no-win situation. If you win the match, no one cares because you beat a girl. If you lose, that's worse than getting girled in a race.

It might be a sucky situation, but I don't see how forfeiting the match helps.

It was the first round, not the championship match. While the guy was a fav to win state, it was not the sure thing, or even visionquest. What would Matthew Modine do?
kurt angle lost to a girl in high school and he wound up wining an olympic gold medal.
he said losing to a girl was so embarassing and motivated him to train super hard, so it would not happen again.
I don't have to agree with someone else's values to respect their decision. There is nothing in this situation that suggests he was afraid of losing to the girl. He was one of the favorites. He made a tough decision consistent with his and his family's values. I can respect that even if I don't agree with it.
Yeah, forfeiting didn't even enter my mind. I just did the best I could. I ended up winning, but not in 17 seconds like the tough guy a few posts above mine. She wasn't super hot, but she wasn't ugly, and the fear of popping a stiffy did distract me for about the first 5 seconds of the match. Once things got going though, I pretty much forgot about it.

I can't blame the kid for forfeiting his match. I would likely do the same thing. Still, that girl should not be taken lightly by anyone. This is Iowa, and anyone who makes the state tournament is a very, very good wrestler. In terms of running a track race, I wouldn't mind lining up against a girl even if I knew she was going to beat me by a mile.
I would have done the same thing. It is not because of fear of losing. It would be the discomfort in fighting a woman. He should never be put in that position.

Seriously. What this guy is saying is that he would rather roll around with guys than girls.
Yep. This was the conclusion I reached too.
there is a website, giving a list of contacts of women who want to wrestle men. i called a bunch of the woman, because it sounded like fun, the problem was they all wanted like $300-$400 dollars an hour. i dont have that much money to be doing that, darn it.
He should never be put in that position? Well this is the state finals so shes been wrestling guys all season , probably 30 or more matches, none of those guys forfeited! But based on what your saying they all should have. Nice logic, come on man get into the 21st century.
However, wrestling is a combat sport and it can get violent at times. As a matter of conscience and my faith, I do not believe that it is appropriate for a boy to engage a girl in this manner
He did what he felt was right by his upbringing. There's no faulting him for that. You may disagree with him that Wrestling is a combat sport or whatev, but he's behaving in a manner that is consistent with his faith and his values. Whether you would wrestle the girl or not, more people should be willing to stand-up for what the believe in, even if it comes at a great personal sacrifice.

Until there are enough girls wrestling for there to be an all-girl division, I see no problem with guys going against girls.
I'd love to sit in on the organizational board that makes that happen...

Hawaii, California and Texas have girls-only state wrestling tournaments.
Oh, wait, that's already happening. Interesting combination of states, I would add.
I wonder how attendance is at these meets? I bet the HS boys actually show up in good numbers to watch the girls wrestle, though it probably also brings out the creepers as well.
On a more serious note, the concept that it's wrong to engage in violence against women is predicated on the false belief that women can't defend themselves. While it is a numerical fact that men are physically larger than women, there are a whole host of other factors that go into capacity to defend oneself, including speed, skill set, aggression, strength, etc. This girl has demonstrated by advancing this far that she defies the logic that supports his convictions. It's fine for him to have convictions, but when new information is presented convictions need to be reexamined.
Political Correctness brings women into men's showers, (but not the other way around)
Good for him standing up for what he believes is right.
Wrestling is a groping / grappling sport. He probably doesn't want to go there til marriage.
And if she was a heavy weight, I sure as hell wouldn't grapple with her either.
why don't they have separate womens and mens wrestling, like with every other sport?
it seems like there would be enough interest now
