Look, if you kill someone (or help someone do it), you should be killed in return. I agree that the death penalty as is is not an effective deterrent. I say go back to hangings on the public square and leave the body there until it starts to stink. Now, there is a deterrent. Plus in the winter, you get a perpcicle!!
So it's about retribution?
If you look at the death penalty in a completely non-emotive way, you'd see that there really isn't any argument for it.
1) More expensive than life in prison
2) No more of a deterrent than life in prison
3) One mistake completely undermines the whole system.
No place for it in a mature society I'm afraid.
Anti-death penalty doesn't always mean sympathy for the criminals though. I couldn't care less what they go through, although I do have sympathy for anyone who was convicted wrongly and executed. That's pretty unfortunate.
