Jason-in-(insert any location in the world here) ought to chime in on this one. 33 years old, slot machine programming job with flex-hours and location, so he moves to China to train at 3000m, 156 mpw, and runs a 2:18 OT qualifier in Berlin a month ago. That works huh?
Go ahead and start getting into the field you want to be in eventually, you can always find time to train if you really care. I work up to 60hpw in a very corporate, sometimes high stress job, and still find time to train. Not quite as much as when life was free and easy in college, but there's still plenty enough.
But whatever you do, DO NOT LEAVE what-ifs hanging in your life, it will only haunt you mercilessly in the end. I still have a what-if or two left to eliminate from my list, none of which have anything to do with running. I took care of those long ago. Most recently took care of a ten year itch to hut ski through the Alps, never had so much fun in my life - EVER. So I'm down to a ski or climb a Himalayan peak dream now, and it's not the money or experience holding me back. It's the requirement for time, as typical itineraries require 6 weeks, which I just can't swing in my work situation. The cool thing about the teaching/prof thing is, you probably can score time off like that. Believe me, time becomes good as gold the older you get. Go for it.
