How is this thread still alive? How annoying.

In some ways it makes Skujas main point, illustrating it quite well actually. He's been tormented by one guy on here (and elsewhere) for years, and he doesn't have to put up with that at FB. Isn't FB great?
(Time yourself on how long it takes to delete this post!) :)
Guess what??! Just got rid of mine yesterday 1/24/11. All of whom I connected to on my wall with the exception of one, would never talk to me through facebook. Three main reasons why I got rid of it:
1. The one person I mentioned above, J. "Flash" Gordon, had a conflict with me through live chat where I asked him a simple running question, but rudely ignored me because he was at his work. All of a sudden, he lashed out at me and completely blocked me from going on his wall. As a result, I ended up deciding to implode my facebook account as of last night.
2. To completely safeguard certain ares of my private business.
3. After 18 months of being on that social forum, I decided to pull the plug because I got nowhere in establishing relationships and never had gotten any compliments from the other friends that connected me.
Maybe you didn't enjoy it b/c you are a SOCIOPATH

FB is pretty much a thing for the young 'uns....teenagers and 20-somethings. Once you get beyond that, if you're still using FB your a wannabe.
Denis Leary had something to say about this on his recent Comedy Central special. Paraphrasing, it went something like this...."If you're over 40 and on Facebook, you need to LOG THE F*** OFF....NOW!!!!"
So true.
Even better than quitting Facebook is to pull a "Facebook Borat". Start using your account in a really inappropriate and annoying manner until only your true friends remain.

More than half of the users are in the 18-34 range. Less than 10% over 55. What else would you expect?

That is not true at all, and 55+ is currently the fastest growing segment.
As stated earlier in the thread, I would not hire anyone who is unfamiliar with Social Media.

According to these numbers it is true. Maybe you have more recent data?

The data supports this.

Not likely. The site from the link above indicates less than 1% of FB users are interested in sex. For me, that's one more reason to stay away. What kind of people are not interested in sex?

What kind of job would require this? Sales? Seriously, what do you do for a living?

Oddly its the older people who can actually use facebook. Which is why its easier for high schoolers/college kids to cut the cord than for most adults. A high school kid is going to see his friends every day. Anything he could want to say to them he can say to their faces at school, or texting, or at parties, etc...As for adults, most use it as a tool to keep in touch more easily with those who dont live near us anymore. If it werent for facebook I would barely ever hear news from my Portlandia friends unless it was something really important to call about (i.e. going to have a baby, or something). I think this is why the age of the average facebook user keeps going up. Kids dont need it and are figuring it out, and adults actually have a use for it. Plus kids dont want to be on a social networking site filled with adults.
A guy I work with just got his 60+ year old friend on facebook because he has had throat cancer surgery and can no longer even speak. So no telephone conversations anymore, etc...this is the only way he can keep in contact with other easily anymore.
This is also why FB will ultimately go the way of myspace and the other once popular sites. As the young move away from it, its popularity will greatly decline and FB will essentially become insignificant. The same will happen to Twitter, but much sooner. Some indications are that Twitter's inevitable decline has already has begun.
Just deactivited my account two days ago.
The reason? I was starting to get sick of Facebook and how oppressive it became in my life. Every day, I would look at my iPhone and pull up Facebook app to see what's going on with other people's lives. Reading their meaningless posts and their not so comical updates. How is Facebook actually "useful" in any way? If I wanted to get in touch with a friend, I'll just text him/her to see what's up or if he/she's in the mood for hanging out. There's also an email account that I can use. For people who says Facebook is the best way to find a long-lost friend, who actually gets back in touch with an old friend when that person was gone for a good reason?
Also, I wasn't thrilled with the idea of having my co-workers looking at my FB account on a daily basis and having them make a comment about my events when it should have been a private one. I never had anything to contribute to Facebook and didn't see the point in it. If I had a legtimate complaint to make about politics, religion, community, etc, I would seek out the appropriate group or organization to express my feelings and become involved with the change. What really scared me yesterday that Facebook became so ingrained into my brain without even realizing it. For instance, I went to home after work and logged onto Facebook without remembering that I deactivited it two days ago! I was browsing through other people's endless rants or silly comments when it finally struck me. Why am I back on this?!?!
That was scary and I had to deactivited my account once again. Right now, I'm doing well and I've managed to check up on current events through other mediums such as online media websites. I just started to realize that, without Facebook, my life just improved in terms of attention towards the outside world instead of worrying about keeping the latest tabs on so-called Facebook "friends".
Anyone decided to get off the Facebook wagon yet?
I've lived in seven states, have friends and acquaintances all over, and keep up with many of them on FB. Most of them are witty, intelligent, fit, cultured people. It works fine for me, a 3D customized yellow pages.
I am in my 30s, so I was not on facebook in college. I work in advertising, though, so I have been extremely active on the platform since it was opened to the public (personal, company profiles, etc).
Most of my "friends" are normal folks who use it to share info, pictures, links and basic communication, but there are always the annoying people who post political rants, semi profane things, etc. If it gets bad enough, I will block them. Basically, everyone is respectful and i don't see anything evil or bad going on.
One disturbing thing that I have noticed lately is the posting of pictures taken by the user. Think amateur "People of WalMart" posts, where Sally sees a fat man at a restaurant and takes his picture and writes soemthing like "This guy just ordered another helping of bread. GROSS!" This is coming from professional adults, mind you. Mothers,
Personally, I just think that is mean and wrong. WTF is wrong with people? Anyway, if that becomes a "thing" among my friends, I will defriend over that. If it weren't for work, I am not sure I would still be on Facebook.
At one point i realised that i would catch up with people less often because i maintained some sort of weird vicarious relationship to them via facebook. Some of us started speaking about this and since we have all dropped facebook we now catch up weekly for dinner or a band etc. I won't be going back.
