Read the article on Khalid and whay he may not run the NYC Marathon. Good article, but I thought that it missed the point about the ground-swell of success at Chicago behind the elite story and the super-fast times.
First late me say that NYC is a great race. Who would not want to run through the streets of NYC with 3 million people cheering you on. However, from the average participants perspective ( the 2:30 marathoner and on back) Chicago puts on a fabulous race. How? A few points. Chicago has a very convienient start/finsh set up minutes from main downtown accomodation. NYC has a spectacular start, but is a hugely inconveinient to get to and energy consuming to wait out on Staten Island for hours prior to the start. Same for the finish. Central Park finish is great, but many have to walk several miles to get gear and then getting out of the Central Park area can take hours. Expos: Not sure what the NYC Expo has been like the last fre years but for a number of years it was, to put it politly a bit of an embarrasment. By contrast Chicago's Expo was very well run and impressive. In a great hall with minimal wait's to pick up numbers and kits. And you could actually shop at the Expo booths - something that runners want to do. Something that you could not do at the NYC Marathon Expo with the exceotiuon of race sponsors.
I could go on, but the customer here is the runner, the race participant. From what I have seen they are getting better service provided at Chicago than at NYC.
