What is this soda stuff? Is it similar to diet pop?

I don't drink soda, but it is not because of running - I just don't really like soda.
This.
You know, speaking of things that runners drink, I never drink any alcohol, but I know a lot of really fast (collegiate national) runners who party and get drunk all the time. Makes no sense.
A doctor I know swears that diet sodas are going to be linked to brain tumors eventually. He said he sees too much of it to be a coincidence.
I once met a fast runner who always wore blue shorts.
To any of you runners that drink diet soda, what is the reason you do this?
To limit caloric intake?
Or you drank it as a kid for some reason and got used to it?
Why?

I drink diet because I don't really care for water or beverages without carbonation. I would probably be severely dehydrated if I didn't drink pop. I also drink so much that the wasted calories in regular pop would cause me to either gain weight or have to eat less food. I choose to eat more and drink diet pop.
I started drinking diet pop about 30 years ago in high school. After awhile, the regular pop tasted so sweet, I felt more thirsty after taking a drink.
As for that ridiculous statement made that diet pop causes you to GAIN weight, I weigh pretty close to what I did in college which is about 132 at 5'8". I will admit that the diet drop red soda from Kroger is pretty addicting. Since starting to drink that a few years ago, the only other pop I like is diet Mt Dew. Since I have never did crack, I can't say whether the diet pop is more or less addictive, but I have never heard of a homeless guy living under a bridge being strung out on Tab.
I drink diet pop for some of the same reasons you listed. When I switched from regular pop about 10 years ago, I lost weight almost immediately. I like the flavor and I like the carbonation. The only caloric beverage I drink is milk.
Oops.....I like the occasional gin and tonic as well.
the level of fail on this thread is too epic for me to describe
I know a 2:11 marathon runner who drinks close to two liters of soda a day.
I used to drink a lot of Diet Coke because I liked the taste, but after I had a tibial stress reaction this was enough to make me stop: "Tufts University researcher Katherine Tucker examined the bone mineral density readings of more than 2,500 adult men and women and surveyed their soft-drink consumption patterns," reported The Los Angeles Times. "She found that women - but not men - who drank more than three, 12-ounce servings of cola per day had 2.3 to 5.1 percent lower bone mineral density in the hip compared with women who consumed less than one serving per day." See http://enews.tufts.edu/stories/802/2003/09/25/Tucker - phosphoric acid is named as the culprit. I still don't worry about aspartame, caffeine, etc., though.
Tell Todd Williams he is not a real runner. Back in his day he drank gallons of diet Coke.

This is a pretty good one for those who think that being a "real" runner consists of having a particular diet.
OK so you drink diet soda to reduce caloric intake AND because you are used to the taste.
I used to be 5'8" 132 lbs also but now I am at a trim 150 lbs.
The 20 pound weight gain just makes me look normal and I can still run a 17 min 5K so I am fit enough for my current purposes of racing for fun some times.
I have never thought of doing anything diet-wise to reduce my weight.
I suppose if you choose to drink a high volume of soda then drinking diet soda would make sense to you.
I am not judging, I just wanted to know the reason why a runner would drink diet soda.
Thanks for the thorough response.
Don't waste your time on soda. Runners drink real beer, forget wasting stomach space on mich ultra. Unless your tryin to squeeze into bike shorts...
Why do some of you call "pop" versus "soda"? Btw, I like real beer--taste mighty fine.
I eat pretty healthy. I don't drink diet sodas, nor regular sodas, nor much other processed foods. I try to stick to clean food. People on diets tend to get so absolute on calories and think 'oh, these chips have less calories..' but it's not just about the calorie count, it's about what kind of food it comes from. Eat fruit, salad, etc and you'll be way better off than counting calories with diet soda crap or whatever else.

Mmmm....beer! I just registered for a race and the prize for the fastest team is win your weight in beer! Forget soda man - will run for beer. Mountain to Fountain 15K
www.bandidos15k.comHow cool is that?!?!?
Where I was growing up in the midwest, it was always called pop. It was NEVER called soda. So, that's why I call it pop.
