Not sure what the purpose of this post is; Wejo's performance is probably in the 90th percentile among coaches and in his age group.

Wejo, Welcome to old age. Maybe people should stop bashing masters.
This actually makes me feel good. I'm almost 10 years older and can smoke someone who was an actual real runner.
Keep it real and keep going!
I just hope you're still sporting the LRC singlet at these races.

Goes to show that talent is overrated. If a 28er can drop to a 39 10k guy. His aerobic capacity, his Vo2max and all those figures have dropped dramatically. That means its capable for other 39 10k guys who are still in their prime to reach sub 30. It must be possible. it's the training, stupid.
Agree on the talent bit. But his aerobic capacity/VO2 max is probably only very slightly lower, in absolute terms.

it's just that when you add 15 pounds, you're dividing by a bigger number when you go from absolute VO2 (ml/min) to relative VO2 (ml/kg/min)
Sir Lance is 100% correct.
Good to see you racing again. It's tough to motivate yourself when you know you've run in the past, and even tougher when so many other people know what you've run in the past. 39:20 isn't bad at all. Keep chipping away.
Give him a break, he's 7 months pregnant.
I was feeling better about myself..and then realised there is no way I could run 39, er or 49
Might make a comeback though...if it stops snowing

True, but those 15 pounds, and the slight effects of being a little older don't account for the difference between now and then in wejo's pace. There is the skill factor too, which is huge, and needs to be reaquired in a runner who has lost fitness.
Dude that is really bad....I haven't trained in six years and I can still break 40 minutes.
I don't believe you.
Wejo,
did you were shoes?
Glad to see you are out running. I feel like you once a 1:06 half marathoner now happy to break 16. Small steps back, but I am sure it feels great to be moving again and getting back into shape.
Aloha - Matt
I read the original post as 29:20 and believed it for about five minutes. I may be intoxicated though.
OK I think yall are reading a bit too much into this. I started out at about 7:00 pace and was ahead of Weldon at the mile mark. It was little more than a regular run for him--he probably went a little harder than normal but it wasn't anywhere close to a "race" effort. He actually wasn't even entered but they gave him a card at the finish so he filled it out grudgingly. This was a free race that we put on for people to get ready for the Cowtown marathon and half marathon so it was really no big deal.
Agreed ; Individual response to training and age calls off all bets. Past 40 it(training) needs to be frequent and consistent. The line between gains and injury becomes thinner.
The recipe for continued running will need to balance speed and racing with prudent recovery. That's very much a personal zone. Often an extra Guiness trumps an extra mile.
Enjoy the journey your dog charts and Merry Christmas.
39 minutes, 20 seconds is pretty far off of what a former 28 minute 10K guy barely around 40ish should be able to run--even with minimal training.
Ventolin hasn't said that Wejo's 28k was worth something 100 times better at another distance.
what is this world coming to?
Hey I ran 34:57 at 40 years of age. I trained my a33 off for it, ( the best I knew how ) I kept training and never ran faster even ten years later ! Wait til you guys get "old" ! Merry Christmas !
