Looks like the soccer kid is back in first place by about 100-200 votes.
I did vote for Riley.

voted for soccer guy. way to go op. you probably just single handily ruined the milers chance at winning this stupid award.
No, he's not Riley's father either, he's a genuinely sincere guy who thinks a kid from Bangor who hauls himself to a couple of sub four miles and third in the NCAA deserves some statewide recognition.
And I agree with him. And Mr 4x60 is unlikely to brag about himself, but he's got his own set of accomplishments that would put to shame most people posting on the board. I think maybe Mr 4x60 might himself deserve to be Maine Athlete of the Year.
Who gamed the system? Riley Masters up by about 3900 votes, and has 75% of the votes. Scam!

laugh! Not sure if you're correct on my meager accomplishments deserving anything but another cup of Gatorade and a slap on the back.(enough to keep me going) However, You are 100% correct I am from Maine. I am old. I am not Riley's father or even a relative. I have only met him once and very briefly. As far as supporting the runner in a poll it's kind of a no-brainer to me as this is called LetsRun after all, and as mentioned until May 6, 1954 no person on the earth had ever run a sub 4 mile. Meanwhile plenty of baseball, hockey and even football was being played back then with many noteworthy performances but up until that historical day nobody had ever cracked 4 minutes. In my opinion one performance in this poll (all we're talking about here) really stands out. However the nice thing about polls is everyone gets to express their opinion, VOTE and may the best runner win!
A think all will agree that at times running doesn't get the main stream recognition of other sports like football, soccer or baseball Here's your (our) chance to make a small unified statement in support of running. I support the runner. VOTE! (no login, one click!) http://www.bangordailynews.com/2010sportspoll.html

You do realize the soccer kid is just some random high school soccer player, right? Class A on top of that, real stiff competition in class A...you are a moron if you think the soccer kid is a better athlete than a sub 4 miler.
I voted for the runner so why do I feel dirty? Dude has 75% of the vote - I suddenly want to vote for an underdog. Am clearly uncomfortable with these mob tactics.

Class A is the largest class, so I'm not sure what your sarcasm is for. I still voted for Riley though.

Another vote for the soccer player. Sub 4 is waaaay over rated. Silly men and their silly lists.
Someone sounds a little bitter.
Do you know how many Class A Champions there have been in the last 30 years? It's easy...one for each sport for each year...there's lots of them. Even more of them if you consider the individual sports. The kids who win them should be proud, and they are unusual compared to their peers, but winning a State Championship is really only a big deal to the kid and to their teams and families (and of course, to the team that they beat).
Do you know how many sub four milers have EVER come out of the State of Maine? I think there have been two: Eric Nedeau and Riley Masters. And Masters even runs for UMaine! And came in 3rd in the National Collegiate Championship! I could understand choosing a NCAA hockey standout or a professional baseball player over Masters--they are a pretty big deal too, and make national impact--
For that matter, if it's OK to choose a baseball player who plays in San Diego and happens to have come from Maine...how about Anna Pierce, who this year won the National Championship in the 1500 --and came 4th in the World Indoor Championship...it was kind of a down year for her after being ranked 2d in the World at 800 meters (as well as 6th in the 1500) last year. She is from Bethel, Maine, and is probably the single athlete from Maine making the biggest world impact right now.
Mainly I was pointing out that the other poster seemed to think class A was not the biggest class. I'm not stupid and know the significance of breaking 4 vs. winning a yearly competition, hence my voting for Riley.
Also, add at least Ben True and Matt Lane to your list.
yeah, I wasn't really trying to educate you, but to add to your point. Sorry if you misunderstood, I should have replied to to a different post.
I've been away from Maine for a while, didn't realize Matt Lane and Ben True had also broken 4--I checked for Bickford, he never ran faster than 4:01--I saw him do that. Of course, Anna Pierce ran 3:59 as well--even better than a sub four mile.
ah Bruce Bickford from Fairfield Maine once ranked #1 in the world at 10,000 meters, don't believe me look it up. Thanks for the memories!

Bitter? No, I actually believe these lists are silly, that's why I posted the comment...
Ever notice you never see former successful *female* runners on these boards posting lists with their names prominently featured? Where's the SUB-4:30 list, or whatever the female equivalent is?
It doesn't get posted because after women are done excelling at their sport, they move on and excel at something else in life, while guys like you (presumption from your post) sadly continue to wallow in the memory of an untouchable past.
Quite honestly, we're embarrassed for guys who have nothing better to do than create lists of stats all day long. It seems a little Asperger-ish, actually...

So you sit around posting on running message boards all day? Way to move on and excel!
