I have received a gift certificate for Magazines.com and am researching what subscription I would like to adhere to. I would like a publication that covers news and politics. My first thought was to subscribe to The Economist because I have bought several of their publications and thoroughly enjoyed their articles and viewpoints. However, The Economist is expensive as shit. So, I would like to hear what news and political magazines you guys read and why you like it?

I like Time, and I also get one called The Week, which basically examines the major headlines from the week, summarizes them, and quotes different newspapers to show the various sides. Pretty good stuff.
The Ec is a cheap fake rag with no bylines. They're known for pilfering academic sources. Al Jazeera English is arguably the most credible magazine today. They actually print Obama's opinions as well as those of the victims of the Obama Nazi/Zion Cultists.
Good luck. I subscribed to the Economist for awhile. And of course I have read Time, Newsweek. I came to see them all as just propaganda outlets in their own way and style.
Its not a magazine but I found the best one stop place for all news- if your are going to have one- is the NY Times. It can also be an elitist propaganda tool but there is also a lot of good substantive hard news there too. But ideally, if you have the time and money it would probably be best to get the NY times, Mother Jones, and some Conservative mag to get an all around perspective.
If the magazine that you feel provides the best coverage is a bit more expensive, I'd say it's worth paying the extra, if you think it is the best.
I personally don't subscribe to political magazines, but when I go to the airport or similar and need something to read, I tend to pick up the economist. Otherwise, I just get my news from google (or ignore the daily news completely, because I believe it to be of fairly low value).
The Atlantic is quite good.
I've always thought the Economist is the best out there, but it obviously is pushing a sort of agenda. I tend to think they favor freedom of economic activity rather than freedom of people. Take some of their arguments with a grain of salt.
I always enjoyed Al-Jazeera (sp?) as well. The two big beefs with them are they always take the Palestinian side with Israel conflicts and never say anything bad about Qatar.
All in all, you won't find a perfect source. I visit plenty then form an opinion.
