What is truly a good body fat percentage to have as a male runner?
I am 32 years old and run around 120 miles a week. Today I was shocked when I had it checked and it was 8.9 percent. I thought I would be much lower.

When you get older the fat doesn't stay off as easily. If you aren't all ready, add in some strength training.
How was that measured?
Mine is about 5-6% but I'm 16 years old.
That isnt too bad...they say anything under 7% is low, and under 5% is dangerously unhealthy...that said, elite marathoners average about 3% bodyfat. They are also east african on average.
400 runner and I last got it checked last spring I was 5.1%. I've put on about 6 lbs of muscle since then while "slimming down", and would say I'm at about ~4.5%
I'm 5'11", 165lb, and around 9% body fat. I'm a reasonably fit but nowhere near elite runner, but I'm still "leaner" and "scrawnier" than 99% of the population.
Bodyfats down under 8% are LEAN, for anyone who isn't paid to be fit.
eat some protein.
I'm 66. My body fat is 6%. I measure it via the Tanita scale which you can pick up for about $50. 3% is essential for human life and many elites are close to that level. As you grow older, that % increases a little but the older elites arent too far off that 3% mark. Earl Fee is at 5%, for example.
You measure your body fat at 6% with a $50 scale, so it's really 12%?
