Anyone have any idea why it is the the U.S.has such a unique stranglehold on orthodontic technology? Are the Brits in particular so severely challenged on this type of practicality? Maybe teh U.S. actually has an exportable skillset after all?

Guess again: braces are so popular in the US because we as a society agree that there is no vision hotter or more lovely than a pretty fifteen-year-old girl with a full set of old-fashioned metal braces. All the rest of the braces are randomly distributed to make the predominance of metal-mouthed, hot girl teens slightly less obvious.

I'm sure it would be an exportable skillset to some degree - but the problem (I imagine) would be that the rest of the world simply isn't as shallow as the United States. I'm not delusional - people EVERYWHERE care about cosmetics, but in the USA it has been taken to a whole other level. Everyone here is told they "need" braces. In other places people are able to take a more pragmatic/balanced approach. As for GB - I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but it is just a myth that Britain is particularly bad. It's basically the USA on the one hand and everyone else on the other. The USA is without a doubt "better," but it is questionable whether anyone else cares (except the OP who uses it to justify baseless drugs accusations).
