Not completely sure what you're asking, but back in the day (ten years ago), the 4k just cut off the first kilometer of the flats. Everything else was the same. If there's a fence in the way now, my guess is that they just move the starting line up to compensate.
The 2.5m start was in the extreme southwest part of the flats and then a direct (diagonal) run-in to the cowpath and everything else is then the same as the 5k course with exception of finish - traditional 5k finishes along Broadway whereas the 2.5m course finished east of that on the path that runs adjacent to the woods.
