I had this surgery about six months ago.
The initial week is where you will do nothing but feel like crap and want to sleep but you will hit a stage of restlessness at about day 8. Dont run, i repeat dont run. I felt like superman because of the pain pills and tore the hernia open again even jogging at a very very slow pace. I had to start all over on the healing process.
Here is a brief description of how i recovered after the second surgery.
Do as little as possible for the first 7 days or so.
Day 8 start walking about a mile a day if you can manage it. this is also the point where i started easing back on the pain pills to get a feel for where my body was in the healing process.
Day 15 you will feel like a million bucks but will still be very sore. I did 10-15 minutes of light stretching before my very brisk walk of about 2.5 miles. At this point i was completely off the pain pills.
Day 22 I did my same stretching regimen but avoiding stretching my abdominal muscles too much. At this point i jogged for the first time. I did about a 10 minute mile pace for about 3 miles and felt fine. At this point i had no pain or tenderness whatsoever.
Day 30 i started running at about an 8 min pace for two miles after warm up and going to about a 7:15 pace for a mile.
After this i felt totally able to run a 7:15 pace for about 5 miles.
At day 45 i attended the US army airborne school, i was very sore for the first few days because of the intensity of the workouts but I was determined not to quit. I did my five jumps and went on my merry way.
Day 60 i did another army pt test. 82 pushups in two minutes, 68 situps and a two mile run at about 12 mins.
Good luck with your surgery and recovery. Dont do anything while on pain pills and listen to your body. Its usually right.
