Canadian middle-distance runner Gary Reed to announce
retirement, source says
(Canadian Press) -- TORONTO -- Canadian middle-distance
runner Gary Reed has decided to retire from competitive track
and field.
A source tells The Canadian Press the former world silver
medallist will make the announcement at a news conference Monday
in Toronto.
The 29-year-old from Victoria battled exhaustion this year
and was forced to cut his season short.
Reed won a silver medal in the 800 metres at the 2007 world
championships. He finished fourth in the event at the 2008
Beijing Olympics.
His time of one minute 43.68 seconds is the Canadian record
in the 800 metres.
According to a release from Athletics Canada, Reed's
personal coach Wynn Gmitroski and national team head coach Alex
Gardiner will also attend Monday's announcement.
