I'm a relatively out of shape former runner trying to get his act together and get back into running. I was an alright runner in high school (17min 5k, 4:43 mile) who kind of stopped running once college began. Two summers ago I started to get back in shape and trained for a couple months before running a half marathon. However since then I have been pretty inactive and also put on a decent amount of weight (Around 175 at time of half marathon to just under 200 now)
I just graduated this past May and now am working my first full time job. I understand the whole "no excuses-just get out in run" concept but there are a few things I have to adjust to that is making it a little more difficult than when I usually try to get back into running shape.
First, I live in South Jersey and work northwest of Philly. With traffic, I commute about 90min each way (I will be moving closer eventually, but for the time being this is my situation). So with my commute and work combined, I am sitting either in my car or at a desk pretty much 7am-7pm every day, with very little activity. This means I have to run in the morning before I leave for work when it is still pitch black and temperature in the 20s. Again, I don't have a problem with doing this, its just an adjustment that's slowing down my progress. I've never really ran in the dark before so I am unused to running when I have difficulty seeing my route. Also, right now my runs are pretty short (about 3-4 miles) so I don't have to get up much earlier than I'm used to but as I progress to longer runs I will be sacrificing more and more sleep, causing another adjustment.
Any advice on how to better adjust to these new circumstances so I can effectively get back into the shape and running ability that I've missed having since high school?
