Is this legit or too high?
If you're fat.

Possible. A common number is 100 kcal/mile, but it does vary with intensity and some inter-person variation.
I would be careful not to base my energy intake on it,however.
i'm not basing anything on it really. I don't think of it as accurate. It seems to be only based on my distance and pace because I don't have a HR monitor. The faster my pace the more calories it says. I think Garmin is just using some random formula
if you are on the heavy side as a runner (180lbs) that CAN be a number you might reach. I usually use 70cal/k, which puts me at roughly 1650 cal for a run like that. But I don't really base my caloric intake on it either.
i burn 80 calories a mile
It's probably wrong about the calories and probably wrong about the distance you ran.

Yeah man. F that Garmin. You should only do runs on certified courses with every 1000 meters marked.

How much do you weigh?
I did 14 miles last week and my 305 said the same thing (1800 cal). I weight 150 pounds, so I assume it's calculated from that. I was wearing a HRM, and I don't think it does anything with the calorie estimate.
The calorie formula on the 405 was considered out and it is something they corrected on the 405CX.
Thanks for that info Pantman. It is definitely not right. I have the 205 so its probably the same as the 405 without a HR monitor.
I am 5'7" 139 lbs. So no i'm not fat, yes i really did run 14 miles, and know that it is 14 miles.
For comparision on a precor treadmill
At a 10:00 per mile pace
weight = 200 lbs
distance 14 miles
calories burned = 2240
Does the Garmin know how much you weigh so that it can factor that into its estimate? My Polar heartrate monitor estimates calorie burn based presumably on heartrate as a percent of max and exercise duration. It has a user profile that includes, if I recall correctly, age, weight, gender, and max HR.
The calorie estimators on most exercise equipment I've used, treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, and such generally seem to be on the high side of what I'd expect, but who knows for sure.
My garmin is set to factory conditions, so i've never input any kind of info about myself into it. That may have something to do with it. Maybe it assumes im Shaquille O'Neil.
When I compare the number of calories my Garmin says I burned with the number of calories the different electronic running logs (like RunningAhead.com and some others) that I've used over the years, Garmin is always higher.
I have no idea which is more accurate, but in my experience the formula Garmin uses always shows more calories burned.

The Garmin does know how much you weigh, assuming you enter the value, of course.
The Garmin will also return very different calories-burned values depending upon whether or not you wear the heart rate strap. If I just go for a 10 mile run, mine tells me I burned 1200-1300 calories. But if I run the exact same course with the heart rate strap, it tells me I burned 800-900.

Pull out the manual, and figure out how to enter your weight and fitness level into the garmin.

Go into the Garmin Training Center. View -> Profile for "(username)"... -> Change the weight value. Now when you get back from your next run the calorie counts will change.
Like another posted stated, having the heartrate strap might also change the values as well, but I don't have any personal experience with that.
Are you running near a large lake?
