I have surgery coming up in a few days for an umbilical hernia. I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of recovery it takes after surgery, is there a way to keep exercising during recovery? Id hate to have to sit on my ass and do nothing.

I had one 6/18/10.
I did essentially nothing for 10 days. Then walked for 7 days. Then did very light jogging.
I've had 5 surgeries and was really surprised at how rough this recovery was for the little surgery that was done. The air/gas they pump into to bloat you up is the rough part.
It wasn't the worst thing ever, but was more than I was expecting.
Thanks for the reply... it's longer than I expected... so basically a month before returning to hard workouts and mileage. I am not looking forward to this surgery because Ill have to break my running build up.

That's probably about right (4-6 weeks). I'm not a real quick healer, so you might get over it a little quicker. I took everything really slow as well since I didn't want to have any complications.
At the quick end of things you might can return to light running in 10 days and workouts after 3 weeks. That's just my non-medical opinion though.
