Sorry "NOT SURE” I am not a racist, but you are exactly what I am talking about. You immediately think we are "White Devils". I am Hispanic and root for white, black, red, yellow and any mix. I just want to see a kid from the USA do great.

That would depend on how interested you are in the NXN winner. Because he's not exactly a home-grown American.

A kid from the USA via Lithuania vs a kid from the USA via east africa. I'm not sure anyone is making a fuss about this but you, but if you can't see why people are knocking you than you're a bit daft.

If someone from the US is automatically for a white kid born and raised in the USA over black kid also born and raised in the USA you might be on to something with the "racist" tag. But when it's a kid born in the USA someone favors over a kid born in Africa other factors than racism come into play when people are selecting their favorites.

I'd say it's more stupid nationalism than racism. Does it really matter in what particular place you're born? Please. Stop whining and just enjoy the competition.

I would rather see someone with whom I can relate to, whether he is black, white, etc. do well than someone that grew up in completely different circumstances.

I can relate to Solinsky, Ritz, even to a great degree Mebb, Manzano, and others that spent a majority of their time living in America, attending American schools etc. I like seeing someone come from the same background that I have do well. I have nothing against Lagat, Kannouchi, and others at all. I like seeing them do great things with the USA on their jersey, but I can't relate to them.

I don't really care what you call people like us. I will root for the first natural born american runner - white or not. I will root for the African to get an injury.

Completely agree. Of course the African children will do well. They completely dominate the sport. It is not exciting, but depressing to see the same group win continuously.

rooting for the first american born chap is no different than rooting for the first guy from your state in NXN, or in the Olympics rooting for your country.

it is human nature to want someone most similar to you to win - we are quite tribal.

As for the LV problem - rooting for LV, who moved to the US at a young age and speaks English with no accent, over Cheserek, who speaks almost no English and moved here recently, is understandable. It is just more fun to root for people more like you.

You want to call this racist, go ahead, but it isn't the sort of evil racism that most people think of when they use the word - you should call it 'tribalist' or 'jingoist' or something like that.

point is, there is no moral equivalence between the klan and rooting for LV over Cheserek.

Is ours an inherently racist society? O course it is. Clearly race plays a part in who you will root for in a running event.

I have no problem with someone identifying more closely with someone they share some real or imagined root.

My issue would be with those people who automatically think that because you are African, you must not be supported.

Or if you are African and emigrated to the US, you really aren't one of us...until we decide you are. Like in the case of Lagat or Meb.

I also have an issue with people thinking that somehow Africans don't have to work hard or be smart to win or break records. Its all sheer talent. Apparently all the smart, hard, working runners are white.

Cheserek worked hard, lived a tough life in Kenya, was lucky enough to make it over here and he deserves to do well.

Why should that be taken away from him?

The biggest motivation African runners have over US runners is that it is a way out of abject poverty. And thats a tough one to match.

Cheseret speaks almost no English? Really? LV has no accent? Really?
