Best U.S. city to host Summer Olympics???

Detroit.

1.) They have proven an ability to host major sporting events in recent years (SuperBowl, NCAA final four, MLB AllStar game, etc..)

2.) Unlike functioning cities, Detroit could demolish entire city blocks downtown to build the Olympic Stadium, etc.. and not inconvenience anyone.

I could see it happening in Seattle.

L.A. has the stadiums, venues, tracks, hotels, international airport, etc. already built and in use every week. L.A. just completed a rail line from LAX to the site of the 1932 Olympic Games and 1984 Olympic Games. L.A. has the most Olympic Medalists of any city in the world. So L.A. is ready today for the Olys should the volcano disrupt London 2012, or for the IAAF WCs should war prevent Daegu 2011. The only other city in the world that is ready this minute is Tokyo.

Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, DC/Baltimore, Phillyare big enough to handle it. Miami, Boston, Detroit, Phoenix, SF/Oakland are borderline, but Phoenix is too hot. The rest listed are too small, though St Louis hosted the 3rd when only 12 countries competed.

Phoenix? seriously? you would be lucky if it was below 110 in August.

Seattle seems to be the best option, they already have some great venues (quest field, Husky stadium if the track was redone)August weather is perfect, major airport, pretty diverse city with the highest literacy rate in the USA, Seattle would Represent the best America has to offer.

Denver might be nice, or the any Bay area city.

Beautiful area and weather for that time of year.

Somewhat centralized in the middle of the country.

Colorado has been a mecca of olympic athletes for a long time.

The altitude makes things a little more interesting.

Plenty of space to build.

Who wouldn't want to take a vacation to Colorado to see the Olympics?

Not Washington DC. Poor transportation infrastructure and nowhere to build anything in the entire metropolitan area. An Olympics in DC would have to be a spread out between NoVa and Baltimore.

How is LA ready "this minute"? Don't you need a track in a stadium that holds 70,000 or more?

I like the thinking here. Use it as a model and testing ground for Green Urban Renewal. Stimulus dollars drivng Green Technology Innovation while replacing the fossil fueled wreck with the sustainable cutting edge future.

We might even see a new type of non-thug/rap music develop like we did with the forming of the Detroit based Tamla :)

Seattle looked into hosting the Olympics a dozen years ago. The citizens of Seattle made it clear they weren't interested:

Also, the track is being removed from Husky Stadium. They plan to eventually build a standalone track, but there's no timeline for that (that I've heard of anyway), and it wouldn't have the seating capacity for a major championships.
