First there are the FM girls who are a shoe in to win the 5th consecutive national championship. FM boys just won states and have a good shot for a national championship.
Syracuse University mens and woman xcountry teams won the North East championship.
This area just kicks butt! But why are they so better then everyone else?
Im a Central NY Coach of a decent program in a mid-sized school (850 kids grades 9-12).
Its hilly? Im talking 1-2 mile long hills that are a part of our every day training.
In my school, the XC runners are the cool kids. THIS IS TRUE- the XC boys and girls make fun of the football players. Very few people-students/staff- have any respect for the football/basketball/baseball players.
Is this common?
Arcadia boys are way better than FM boys

It is kind of silly to make this argument at the college level, since virtually all teams recruit from more than just the immediate area they are located in, but it does seem like New York high schools are consistently some of the best in the country. I also wonder what makes some areas "hot spots" when other areas with similar populations, geography, and demographics produce nothing special year after year.
If what the guy above me said about cross country runners being the cool kids is true, that would definitly help explain it.
Los Angeles County residents brought home 10 of 33 USA T&F medals from the 2009 IAAF Berlin World Championships so I don't know where you get that bogus idea of yours.

OP has a very good point. Compared to the nation as a whole the Syracuse area population is pretty small yet its HS and collegiate student populations have done amazingly well.
The above poster lol right compared this small area to the whole country almost proving the guys point.

Saugus is gearing up for the end of the season? What? Do they usually gear up for the middle of the season? That is ridiculus. They always gear up for the this meet, that is why so many of their girls get hurt, they put everything into trying to beat FM and all they do is beat themselves.

cuz in this area (and NY in general) kids start running at age 12

FM is hardly at the center of everything going on in Central NY. It is a "wealthy" area of one of the poorest regions in the country: "Rich" by attrition. Move to any other state or big city and FM is a middle-classs community. It has it's drugs, alcohol, infidelity like everyplace else.
The FM kids that I know are wonderful. The grade school kids are darlings. The girls will win NXN in the next half-hour and I will be cheering. The FM team are a fine group of young ladies and young men and they are represented by a very good man in Bill Aris, but please spare everybody the egocentrism. This a very big country with lots of communities that would leave Central New Yorkers jaw-dropping on sight.
Remember there are cities over 20 times the wealth of Syracuse. F-M is a typical neighborhood in a boom city.
Remember also that two of the top women's 5Kers ever are from the Syracuse area or within a couple hours drive (Jen Rhines from Liverpool, a suburb of Syracuse, and Molly Huddle from Elmira, a couple hours away).

If history proves anything the runners who won today will not even be competetive in college, much less ever even get a sniff of being the best in the country.

I claimed this spot had the best SCHOLASTIC runners in the COUNTRY. Name a location in this country with better scholastic runners. You can't. I'm a coach in NY State- Central NY and I often wonder that myself. But it goes with other sports, too.
In NY State football is a joke- why? SU isn't full of NY kids. The Texas colleges have a ton of Texas kids.
Why are Florida, Pennsyltucky, Ohio, Alabama, you could go on- so much better than NY in Football?
Why do the Northeast States suck at soccer?
Why doesn't anyone play lacrosse? (oops- it's the upper middle class white boy's chance to be a good "athlete" I forgot).
Im sure you'll find a system of coaches that do a good job of getting a large number of kids into the program at a young age. They probably have a way to recruite runners to run at that school, or at the least make sure a kid with potential attends that school.
Im sure parents who have kids that want to run xc seek out that school as well.
Look at what York has done over the years, im sure its similar.
