That's ridiculous. No one gets cleared for a season because of what they ran the season before. He is on a team.. he should be getting better. AJ Acosta was putting the team first and just hanging back to help out his teammates. Unfortunately they had to drop out.
AJ is good and (3:36, 3:53) we all know this. BUT the real problem is Vin Lananna! It's that simple, he is the most overrated coach ever. It's not hard winning titles when AlSal coached Rupp to lead the way. he (Vin Lananna) will never win another title again without Rupp.
AJ don't sweat it! You're the man and will be fine in track and when you're done with your eligibility GET OUT OF EUGENE and get a real coach.
Yeah Vin sucks! He did such a terrible job with Wheating too. He should really consider retiring before he ruins any more athletes by making them run 3:31.

You're are right he does suck. Wheating is Wheating and Vin sucks as a coach

EL G would have never won silver in the 10k training for the mile and would have lost a lot more to Lagat and Ngeny had he moved to training for the 10k.
He won at 1500 and 5000, there is a big difference between 4:15 pace for 3 miles and 6 miles.
Mopping up Americans in any distance over 800m after the 70s is something so unimpressive it shouldn't be mentioned.

A sidenote in defense of Ray Allen: Ron Artest, dirty player that he is, purposely injured Allen's leg late in the series. Ray Allen could barely jump the last two games, and obviously you could see the difference in his jump shots.
AJ proves it only takes a boy to sprint a few times around a track, but it takes a man to run 10K on grass!!!

Agreed 100%. The kid is a workhorse, just not a great 10K XC racer. I was rather surprised that he ran XC this fall, more surprised that he made Oregon's top 7 group after the long track season with races in Europe going late into the summer.
Unfortunately we have too many posters here who don't really understand the difference between middle distance racing and XC. I'd love to see one of the criticisers accomplish anything remotely close to what Acosta has done.

Yes, I'd like to know, too. It is not a question of AJ's stamina...didn't he run 3 races the final day of Pac 10's....including a PB in the 5,000 to cap it off.
Perhaps, his track season just went on too long....from indoors thru into August.

Some milers do really well in cross country, some struggle. Take other Lananna coached examples from Stanford. Robison ran 3:35, NCAA Champ at 1500, and finished top ten in cross. Jennings and Stember never did anything in cross country but were Olympians at 1500.
That said, this is a poor performance from AJ, and a poor showing from Oregon overall. Puskedra and Centro ran great, everyone else sucked.
I don't care what happens in the race, unless you broke your leg, and the bone is sticking out of your skin, you finish the race, especially at the nationals. A DNF is completely unacceptable.

It would be different if Acosta was not a Footlocker Champion in high school. You'd think he could at least be All-America in Cross-Country.
