A bear - you could make weird noises and scare bear off. If shark and you begin bleeding, you are toast. But would be kinda surreal being eaten by a shark - like drowning. Far worse would be being attacked by lion or tiger.
Bear.
I don't swim too well. If I get mauled and want to crawl into a ball and cry I don't want to have to worry about drowning.
If I am on land I choose the shark. If I am in the water I choose the bear.
A mountain lion or a grizzly bear?
No.

Exactly what I was going to say. I'm almost never in an environment in which a shark could be an effective predator, so generally, I'd go with the shark.
Bear. Who wants to be devoured by a fish? Something about the shark's fishy nature, the cold-bloodedness, makes it so completely alien and evil.
Also, combining two of the worst ways to die (drowning and mauling) is not my idea of a good time.
Mr. Obvious put it best, though.

For the OP's question, I say shark. The likelihood that a shark will kill you is lower than that of a bear. Usually, they will come in for the attack and give up when you thrash. A bear, on the other hand, knows exactly what it wants and is probably mad at you.
If I were choosing a way to die, I would say bear. It would be quicker and probably less painful/terrifying).
As for the Mountain Lion vs. Bear angle, I say bear. Mountain Lions freak me out b/c they aren't that big. Something about being attacked by a super agile killing machine like a mountain lion just scares the crap out of me.
I'd have to think that once a shark got its jaws in your torso the end would come pretty quickly. Once that happened I don't think drowning would be a possiblity.
I go with the shark for that reason. I would think getting mauled by a bear would take longer.
The worst way to go would probably be a gator that drags you under the water and death rolls you. Drowining, pain, sheer terror...(shudder).

The gator would be scary. My parents live on a lagoon near the beach in Florida. There are plenty of gators in the lagoon and I am always scared that one is going to get me when I am outside. I have seen them eye my kids before, it is not a comforting sight. We have to be VERY careful when we visit grandma. If a dog or kid gets out, it could be very bad. My dad keeps a loaded .45acp in his (combo locked) tool closet (next to lagoon) in the event of an emergency.
Damn, we sound like rednecks.

POD!
Easily Bear.....quick swipe of the paw to the head = instant death.
The shark would take chunks out of you and you would be alive for awhile.
Agree with earlier - lion or Tiger or a Jaguar would be the worst - ever seen Apocalypto when the guys gets mauled by the Jaguar? Absolutely brutal
That poor bison looks so mangy. Go bison, go!
It probably met its fate though.
Depends on the type of bear or shark.
Black Bear vs Great White...Bear.
Grolar Bear vs Caribbean lanternshark...yea Shark.

Did you read the captions next to the photos? It says that the bison probably fell into a hot spring and got it's fur scalded off. It did get away from the bear, but had to be put down the next day.
Can't you punch a shark in the eyes or gills, and it will leave you alone? Or is that a myth?
I do know punching a bear probably won't help you.
Not quite:"Candygram!"

I think it's the nose you're supposed to punch them in. Or maybe that's just the easiest part to hit.
Honestly I think I'd rather be killed by a bear than survive a shark attack; those f***ers are scary.
