socks
I say, throw caution to the wind and rock 'em both!
Uh, just make sure you look into the socks before trying them on...
Why not just get compression long tights? You know, all in one.
Never had the shorts but I have used the socks and calve sleeves. Compression socks are good for recovery and the calve sleeves are good for running. Just My opinion.
Umm compression shorts don't really help out with recovery or anything imo. They just keep my junk in the right place and keep my quads warm.
In my experience, compression shorts prevent chafing, and compression socks (sleeves) help recovery. Which is more important to you?
you people worry about the wrong things. that is readily apparent.

Any reason in particular?

+1
I like the Zehsah calf sleeves.
If you go the sock route, definitely make sure to look in both first!
Compression shorts are a marketing fad trying to sell you tight shorts at twice the price.
In order for compression socks to offer a physiological benefit, they need to have a gradient compression. High - to -low. With compression socks, quality socks have their compression levels listed e.g. 12-20mmHg, 20-30mmHg, etc. I have never seen shorts or tights that can provide this information.
Save your money on the shorts and get yourself a nice pair of performance socks/sleeves and recovery socks/sleeves. I like the lower level compression socks for performance and higher level 20-30mmHg for recovery.
If cost is an issue, a friend of mine introduced me to SaveOnCompression.com which sells high quality compression socks and sleeves without a brand. Not sure about the no branding thing, but the socks are as good in quality as the CEP and Zensah socks I had. They also had some cool styles I hadn't seen before.
In my experience, switching to CW-X Pro running shorts (very tight) eliminated most of my long-term hip pain. I've tried other tight shorts, but the CW-X Pro did the trick. I won't run in anything else. It's just one data point, of course.
