I just stumbled across this thread, and i'm in the same boat as you as far as my running goals. My age, height and weight are the same as well.
Good luck tomorrow, looking forward to hearing your race report!
Greetings,
Well, the marathon is in the books. I finished and I thought I did well. In the interest of keeping anonymous, I'll say I ran faster than 3:30, but slower than 3:20.
Took it out very easy (8:30 pace) and then at about 3 miles I got into a little faster rhythm which I held until the end of the race.
I never bonked or hit the wall and the my pace average for the last 4 miles was as fast as any 4 miles I ran in the race, so I felt good about that.
Naturally I'm pretty sore today. I'll try to get in any easy 20 minute run tonight. If I can't pull that off I'll walk.
Now the focus is all on losing weight.
Thanks for the interest and support kindred spirit.
nice run - very impressive given what you have written
Well done, good pacing job. You misinterpreted my last post, have another look. Don't run for a few days, there's no point, you will gain nothing and just make yourself more tired. Eat more for a few days, before you focus on losing weight, you need to recover first.
Thanks for the nice words.
Completed a 25 minute walk, jog, walk tonight followed by 35 minutes of icing various body parts.
Congrats.
Don't rush anything this week. A week of walking/maybe jogging/maybe nothing will be better in the long run than running this week and setting yourself back.
I'm trying to remember that myself as I fight through a minor ache.
Ok, latest update is after my little shake out run on Monday I had a pain in the bottom of my right foot, in the outside portion between my heel and mid foot. I iced and took pain killers, but the pain was still there in the morning. As a precaution, I went and got an xray on Tuesday afternoon and thankfully it showed nothing.
Obviously this is a little setback and I'm sure those who warned against doing the marathon are saying "I told you so". You guys are probably right.
All that said, I am not discouraged. I am patient. I've got a plan and I will recover from this.
I own an elliptical exercise machine which will get some use while this foot thing heals and I'll also being doing some other strength work.
Yesterday was a complete rest day. Today, I did some push ups in the morning and some core work this evening.
Yesterday, I did some weight less squats in the morning and in the evening I completed 40 + minutes on the elliptical and did core work. Weighed in at 181.6 this morning. 2 1/2 pounds to my end of the month weight goal.
Update, Did work outs on the elliptical of 45 minutes on both the 10th and 11th. Push ups the morning of the 10th, Squats and lunges the morning of the 11th.
Hard to tell if my foot is getting better. If the pain persists, I'll go see a podiatrist next week. I've been icing every night.
sorry about your foot, ID. Not sure what to tell you - If I were unable to run I would probably start that situp and pushup routine that I know I should do. And cycle, if the weather permits.

Sounds like you're being smart about getting back on track, well done. You just ran a marathon, and now you are recovering with some cross training. Sounds like you have a good attitude about it, too, which will help.
I look forward to hearing more of your quest. Godspeed with your recovery.
First, thanks Agip and Mouse.
Agip, get well soon.
Latest update, the foot is definitely starting to feel better. I'm cautiously optimistic that I'll be resuming some running next week. I'm going to wait a good 3 or 4 days after all symptoms are gone before I try some very short runs.
In the meantime, I think my fitness may actually be improving with my cross training.
Sunday, I started the day with push ups and finished with 30 minutes on the elliptical and some stretching.
Today, I started with squats and lunges in the morning and tonight I did 65 minutes on the elliptical.
I'm still icing my foot on a nightly basis.
Oops, should have wrote, Get Well Soon VF!
Thanks ID, you too!
I'm getting ready to head out for an easy hill run in about an hour. Trying to get better about a relaxed pace and being patient.
Hope you had a good run VF.
Still on the elliptical for me. 60 minutes this evening. Did push ups in the morning.
Still slowly improving most of this week. If nothing else I'm getting practice running easy. This morning was way better. I gave in to taking an anti-inflamatory - what the hell was I waiting for.
Hope you are getting back to healthy too ID.
VF,
Glad to hear you're on the mend.
No running yet for me, but I'm on the right track. This morning there was no pain in my foot, some very slight "tightness" though. It feels like there is like a little knot right where there was pain before.
Wednesday for me was a complete rest day, which I think I needed. Yesterday started with push ups in the morning and then last night I walked for 5 minutes on the treadmill and then did 60 minutes on the elliptical.
I'm going to gradually test the foot over the next couple of days and if everything goes well, I'll likely do a little 5 minute run on Sunday.
BTW - This thread started with what my goals are within the next 24 months (some sort of lifetime PR), but I have also decided on a longer term intermediate goal. That would be the club nationals masters XC race next December, which I believe is in Seattle. I think if I get in great shape by then, I would really enjoy that. I've been inspired by the reports of this years race in Charlotte. What do you all think constitutes great shape for me relative to where I am now? I'm think the ability to run sub 36 in a 10k is the keystone for me. Any opinions?
I always did speed work 7 days after my marathons with no running in between. And I always ran very fast and found it so easy and natural, probably because I would run the last 150 meters or so of the marathon as fast as I could.
So I would do about 6 x 150 - 200m very fast but stop before I got tired.
It usually took me a full month to recover 100% and so I would keep the mileage low and not run too hard.
Now, one other thing, I think you should change your posting name, because impossible dream will be a self fulfilling prophecy. If you want to run as fast as I did, then you need to believe it is possible.
That certainly goes contrary to traditional thinking live the dream. I'm curious to know what kind of performance you had in your marathons as well as how you progressed from season to season after following that method.
Not a bad idea about the handle too. Maybe we should start typing our replies to "possible dream" instead of "impossible dream".
