Someone else has much to learn about running and competing. He was injured, limping. Why try and finish the race and completely screw his knee up? Dumb remarks elsie.

Even if you offically retire to the IAAF he can still notify them that he is coming out of retirement to compete again at any time! You can tell this discussion was made irrationally and due to high emotions as Geb had committed to the Toyko Marathon in February a few weeks ago.
I love Geb. He is a world class runner and world class person. I don't want him t go out like this. ;(
VIPAM you called it and you was right. Haile is now singing a different tune and hinting that he may not retire. Gebremarium said he hadn't heard it from Haile and it was just reported to him and he would talk with Haile concerning his retirement. Way to go VIPAM!

Why is it that all of the posts which attempt to defend and support the posts of VIPAM exhibit the same illiterate writing style, ignorance and paucity of reasoning capacity? Oh, if you're wondering, the previous sentence is a rhetorical question. I know the answer, VIPAM.
A number of posters already said that he would not retire. That this was a knee jerk reaction to his dropping out.
But he won't get faster (IMHO). He is going into his late 30's. Aging is an issue. He should compete, but not be so marathon happy for awhile and then focus on lowering the master marathon record once he turns 40.
I mean what else is he going to do? Play in the NBA?
I'll respond even though Rupp didn't break 13 this year which was guaranteed.
Gebrselassie isn't retired until he files the correct paperwork with the IAAF et al.
From what I understand, official retirement will preclude him from random drug testing and he won't be able to just jump into a race if he wants to come out of retirement.
He would have to file for reinstatement and go though a period (1 year?) where he would be subject to drug testing before he can compete again.
This isn't the NFL where you can say "I'm retired" and then just jump back into it the next year.
Geb has to think through the retirement decision.
He may want to unofficially retire and keep getting tested in case he wants to jump into the Olympics.
He is such a Prima Donna! Haile had a bad race and screamed retiring only to make a comeback before the NYC marathon course is clean. He is such a great athlete and now he can added accomplished liar to his resume.
