Maybe Texans are just too stupid to be out in public unless they're in cars.
"Texans"? Almost everyone in Texas is from another place, not Texas.
I wish for separate trails for cyclists and pedestrians.

this story reminds of this vid of the cyclist hitting a businessman and it canceling out.
Ok, time to bring some common sense to this thread...
Firstly, let me state that I have been on the trail in question dozens of times..
1. The trail is extremely crowded at this time of year, at that time of day. You have cyclists, walkers, kids, runners, joggers, pets on/off leashes, roller-blades and strollers...
2. Given #1, any serious cyclist has ZERO place being there if they intend to train with any sort of intensity. I would liken it to a runner trying to get in a serious speed workout in a mall or airport.
3. We don't know the speed of the cyclist in question. It is definitely possible to fall, hit ones head, and die from a brain injury after simply losing ones balance. If you don't brace yourself at all, your head hits cement VERY hard after a 5-6 foot tumble.
4. The accident may have been "caused" by the jogger, and the iPod, but really, this could happen to anyone. We all let our guard down on occasion, and this time, people were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
5. This incident was certainly tragic, and it's a shame to see such a smart, young life ended so early over such a tiny mistake.
Those are all pretty indisputable facts, so here is my opinion. All the items in #1 can exist together (mostly) without the risk of injury except the bikes. The bikes are what make the whole situation dangerous. I just can't imagine why someone would want to bike there on a crowded day...it just makes no sense.. Personally, I wouldn't blame the administrators of the trail if they banned bikes all together, or if they made "bike-only" hours at some time during the day, and prohibited them the rest of the time.

The horse is already out of the barn dude. My guess is that at least 75% of "joggers" wear headphones.
Try again when you feel like making sense, stupid Texan.

If you live in Texas, whether or not by choice, then you're a Texan. If you're too smart to be a Texan then you'd move somewhere else.

Just an example of the "us vs. them" attitude throughout the thread. WTF? Pretty much every running I know does at least a little cycling. Maybe triathlons are bigger in Chicago than Texas, but lots of people are both runners and cyclists. Perhaps that's why I don't see that kind of attitude above that much here.
The lake path in the city gets really crowded after 5 and on weekends. So most serious cyclists do workouts in the mornings. In the city it's pretty much the only option, as there are no long country roads with few intersections. During the crowded times there's always some cyclists who go a little too fast. The main danger isn't with joggers, who are experienced enough to know to stay in the side lane, but the tourists, who zig zag randomly and walk 3-5 people side-by-side, blocking everyone. On my bike I have no choice but slow down. If I have the energy I'll yell at them, or clip someone gently with my elbow, but it's like shouting at the flocks of geese or the tides.
It would be nice if all the paths had the soft cinder lanes like they do on the north and south sides, because it seems to help a lot.
The woman was hit by the cyclist.
The woman was knocked to the ground as a result of being hit by the cyclist.
The woman's head hit the ground, due to her being knocked down by the cyclist, and she died.
The cyclist was the cause of the woman getting hit, getting knocked down, and her death.

Seems to me that the "jogger" is more in the wrong than the cyclist in this case. Making erratic moves on a busy trail when your senses are blocked is not the fault of the cyclist. Even if he was speeding, it doesn't change the fact that the jogger did the wrong thing. It is unfortunate the cost was so high.
I got yelled at by a cyclist because I was running on the left side of the trail, the funny thing is that she was wearing headphones while cycling, and really had no room to complain about dangerous behavior.
This is the correct answer, except that the cyclist you mention who yelled at you for running on the wrong side was correct to do so---stay on the right on such a trail brother.
Also, a bicycle even going under 10 MPH (typically the speed limit on such paths, which I know goes unheeded) is still going fast enough to kill a person; all it takes is for the person to fall and hit their head after being struck.

You missed something, though. Why was she hit by the cyclist? Because she decided to step in front of a moving cyclist. The woman was the cause of her contact with the cyclist, the cyclist did not turn his front wheel so that he would run into her.
That hurt, you got me, I am never trolling this place again

I wasn't aiming for anyone. Because the cyclist was driving his vehicle in a dangerous manner. The woman had no control of the cyclist on the bicycle, and did not cause him to run into her. He should have stopped or turned away but did not.

auren Huddleston of Dallas was jogging on the Katy Trail near Routh Street about 7 p.m. when she abruptly turned left as the bike rider attempted to pass her, witnesses told police.
She should not abruptly turn left.
Well she won't anymore!
The cyclist yelled for her to get out of the way, so she veered to the left to get out of his way, but he ran into her anyway. He ran into her, he killed her, it was his fault that she's dead.

Are you truly this dense? Show me any report where he yelled for her TO GET OUT OF THE WAY. Where does it say she veered left TO GET OUT OF THE WAY? Nowhere. She suddenly veered left into the path of the bike.

It's been stated many times on this thread that he yelled at her, and is also in the articles. What's with all the caps, too much coffee? You're the one who is dense.
