Its an insult to servicemen and servicewoman to make that statement, as running is a trivial, fairly selfish endeavor.
This sentence is an insult to coherent English.
Also, you're kinda dense.

How do you figure? I suppose there are aspects that may disturb an English teacher. But nonetheless the meaning of the sentence is 100% clear.
Isn't that the point of writing? To be 100% clear as to the meaning of the writer?

What owns the 'an insult' and why is it insulting to servicemen yet only one servicewoman?
Also, running is only as selfish and as trivial as you make it. Finding fulfillment in running brings benefits to many others.
OK. you want to open up this discussion, pal? D1 University of Colorado athletes under Mark Wetmore are smart to go there to race fast and at the same time get a great education so they can make a good living - either from running or by becoming a college graduate.
The same can't be said for military service, where soliders (usually with below average IQs to begin with - that's why they ended up in the military) are dying in vain. most people who join the US military service in general are poor and dumb, have no idea what's going on in the world, and had limited options but to join the military. Then after they get back, if not already dead, they suffer from things like depression PTSD and physical crap and want Sarah Palin and Christine O'Donnell elected.
And our "servicemen" probably (subconsciously) love that there is FEAR over supposed threat US faces (started after 9/11 and continuing over oil) because it means people will respect and bow down to them, continue giving them benefits to help with the pathetic lives they've lived - & physical and mental ailments they now face - because they unknowingly became victims of the system.
Surprise! An ignorant response on letsrun!
First of all this discussion should not be about the armed forces and CU as there is little connection. Mark is certainly one of the top distance coaches in the US. His record truly speaks for itself. I think that any coach would be happy to achieve what he has. I will say that he does not seem to be the greatest recruiter but getting an athlete to develop over the 4-5 years (and often 6 years in CU's case!) there is no question that he does an amazing job.
I won't get sucked too far into the discussion on armed forces other than to say that to the idiot that is ridiculing them and calling their lives pathetic, please take a long look in the mirror. Wow!
Can somebody link to the Jay Johnson Running Times piece being referred to here?
How do they get 6 years?
Did anybody here run or remember the old course in the field next to the buffalo? I thought it was awsome...then I saw the new course and thought why the hell do they have it there???
"[The] field next to the buffalo"........

I took a quick glance but I wont say too much other than that i have a great education and a great job because it'll just cause more uproar and trolling.
Armed Forces are a joke. They can suck my dick.
Given the choice, would you go to 4 year college and be an NCAA xc/track athlete or report to base training to fight in a senseless war? For the latter very often there wasn't any choice at all there.

I'm sure anyone who went to a service academy got a much better education than you did, worked harder in life than you did and has much better leadership skills than you have. So when they retire from the military and enter the public sector they will be your boss. Maybe you can suck their dick.
wetmore's success is litered with the bodies of those who were wrecked by his system. name one of his hs all americans who did anything afterwards? maybe buck. most of the rest you never have heard of again cause they quite the sport or never came close to their hs times. what about the mass of college runners who never made it? yes he has had success, but on the trampled backs of many.

Huh? Any coach has that and Colorado has tons of All-Americans. Not all of them were even All-American in high school.
5th guy on CU's team looks to be Aric Van Halen - now that's REALLY badass.

that's very much the exception rather than the norm. if that's true, then why don't people admitted to 4 year universities join the military after high school? do they obtain better leadership skills than they'd get elsewhere? most of what ive seen involves low IQs, PTSD, and later in life sporting the "im a veteran so i deserve respect"
The people with the low IQ who end up in the military either do that or work at McDonalds. I'd say they're putting themselves into a much better position to succeed later in life by entering the military. If they choose to get educated while they are in the military the military pays for it. People do go to four year schools and join the military afterwards. ROTC, the Guard, the Reserves are all programs put in place to educate future soldiers.
I know many many veterans, and none of them act as if they should be treated any different because of their service. I used to work at a bar frequented by veterans, and honestly it was just more cool stories for them to tell. Maybe it's just the part of the country I live in though.
Every war is senseless. Just because you don't agree with to political agenda of our most recent war (I most certainly don't) doesn't mean you shouldn't support the people putting their lives on the line for our country.
