Who cares????????????
Who cares????????????
There are about 20 kids at this age running very near this level in the United States every year. Whats so special about this?
Yes, I'm pretty sure they woud have run low 12'40s, given that Hicham ran 7'23 ( very poorly paced race - he shouda gone 7'20 that day off even pace ) off just his 1500 ability
I have a sneaky feeling Bernie wouda been quicker at 5k than Hicham, because they only had a small difference over 1500 but likely Hicham had significant better 800 ability as he rarely lost in slow races, so likely better basic speed - therefore Bernie's endurance seemed better, as say a 1s gap over 800m shrinks to less than 0.5s at 1500 - by 5k, that gap woud theoretically be significantly overturned, but that's theory
There's little point in extrapolating to 5k for them back in late '90s/early '00s as they really were pretty much only training for 1500
Very much so
Unfortunately Hicham's 7'23 isn't on youtube, but when it finally appears, people will realise what a ridiculous run it was from a pacing point of view & how incredibly well he did to hang on to 7'23 & how vulnerable Komen's record was
The 1st km was run at an amble ( something around 2'30 IIRC ) & there & then every discerning viewer believed the record had no chance of being broken
Then however, he put in a suicidal 2'23 km, which again, viewers watching meant it was impossible for him to survive that last km
He held onto the impossible almost to the bell before cracking
Anyone who saw it knew the record wouda been touch & go off even pace & we woudn't be talking about Komen today in the reverential tones the kids do
Morceli & Saidi-Thief also ran 7'25s off shitty splits ( outside 5'00 at 2k )
With decent pacing, the lists shouda read
Komen 7'20
Hicham 7'20
Geb 7'21
Kennster 7'21
Morceli 7'21/7'22
Saidi-Thief 7'22/7'23
Cherono 7'23
which wouda exploded the Komen myth...
How about they acually run a real distance so we know how fast they are without guessing.
Though this is high school seniors, it gives you some frame of reference:

'but Komen would have had a tough time beating them at 3000'
But 3000m was Komens best distance. El G 1500m and Bekele 5000m+. For a year or to he would give anyone a run for their money, even a peak Geb was done by him
As for this Japanese kid. Well it a good time, but how much training has he done to get there, athletes improve a lot from 15 to 16 he will need to drop 10 seconds + off his projected mile time to stay with the competion over the next year
UK coach, if you're going to quote me, at least try to understand the quote in context. You owe yourself that much of an education...
