Preposterous. Any male with a modicum of talent can get to a 5:00 mile by jogging 30 minutes a day and doing the least bit of speedwork once weekly. If it doesn't happen for you in a season, it's great that you love running, but it might come hard to you.
A sub-3:00 marathon, on the other hand, requires training and planning, period. Running track and XC for a few years then doing a sub-3:00 is NOT "doing it off of no training."
The vastly larger number of people with a sub-5:00 mile to their names speaks for itself.
Agreed that this rule differs for women.
