Waiting for medals.... wrote:
Anyone who watched the race can tell she wasn't trying. In the last 20m she moved past 3 runners with very little effort.
Prediction: She doesn't win another major competition until the World Championships. And when she does it will be running away.
For those who didn't see the race, here's what happened.
At the 100m break, Semenya is in 9th. By 200m, she is last (11th). She runs the second turn in lane two. By 250m, she is nearly 20m behind the leaders. She moves to 9th and stays in lane two. She runs the curve from 400m to 500m in lane two, still about 15m behind the leader. At 500m, she accelerates to about 7th or 8th down the back stretch. She runs the turn in lane two, still about 15m back. Hitting the final straight, she moves out to lane three and strides up to third, making up about 10m over the last 80m and making it look easy.
I'd agree that she was ordered by her coach not to win. Otherwise, why would she drop 20m off the pace in the first 250m? It was very obvious when she came in after the break in 9th that she slowed to let the others past her. Also, she ran the entire race in lane two, except for the start up to the break and the final stretch, where she ran in lane three. Why would anyone trying to win run the entire race in lane two?
