Intrinsic is NOT an synonym for essentially in a colloquial sense, it means essentially in a literal sense. Intrinsic means "real value" not derived value.
The word you are looking for is "extrinsic".
You can offer the opinion that Kipketer's 1:41.24 in Zurich is extrinsically superior to his 1:41.11, but you cannot say that 1:41.24 is intrinsically superior to 1:41.11. It is not, nor will it ever be.
You're being silly. What's referred to is the athletic performance inherent in each effort. 1:41.11 is *extrinsically* better because we happen to measure athletic performance in minutes and seconds.
