As a member of UCLA track and field during the late 90's into early 2000's, I considered myself very fortunate. As an avid track fan coming out of high school and into college I felt I had joined an all-star assemblage of athletes led by coaches of all-world track and field athletes such Art Venegas, John Smith, Bob Larsen, Jeanette Bolden, and many others.
However, it was Mr. Scott Davis, the voice of Drake Stadium, who added so much color and character to our competitive efforts as athletes at so many meets, his engaging and informative manner enlightening spectators and athletes alike in our performances. He also had an uncanny ability, through his announcing, to evoke excitement in watching a race, every race, no matter the size or importance.
What Chick Hearn and Vin Scully may be to basketball and baseball, Scott Davis probably was to track and field stadiums throughout the world. It certainly felt that way at Drake Stadium.
A great man. Thanks for the memories. RIP.
