I am a male cross-runner.I have a hemoglobin in the mid 130's. Just wondering if this is low and whether it could be affecting my performance. Do iron supplements help raise one's hemoglobin level?
Thanks

I think you mean serum ferritin levels. they are in the normal range of 20-250ng/ml. hemoglobin for males is in the range of 12.8-17.4.
130s is pretty high for most people
Like the previous post said, Ferritin levels below 20 ng/ml show that iron stores are low and below 12 they have become completely depleted. you should also check your hematocrit. It should be at least 40%. If your doc finds that you are iron deficient, the preferred source of iron is ferrous sulfate. You should take it with some vitamin C or orange juice.
Yeah, you'd better check what number is low. Despite, your hemoglogin should not be low if you are young and healthy (generally speaking). Ask for your doctor to run a cbc- this will include an "MCV" which will help tell you whether your anemia is from decreased iron. If that is the case, you'd be well off to figure out what is causing this. Diet can do it (little red meat, etc), but colon cancers can also present as this as well. Get it checked out.
