Never mind. I found it in that Runners World article. 52.4
Sorry missed your question. Yeah, also it says it wasn't so much the time, since it was nasty and windy in early spring in vermont, but the way he went out and came back and nailed the guy.
Imagine 6'5" Wheating, a total greenhorn back then leaning over as far as he can and trying to get out of the gates in a standing start 400, next to the top returning 400 guy in blocks. Wheating gets out slow in an 800 even now, can't imagine how slow he got out in a 400 in his first outdoor race ever.

Webb is the ultimate talent, set aside his bs and problems and it still took him years to drop that far.

Webb was a moderate talent compared to Wheating, with a huge athletic base from being almost a national class swimmer for years, and then developed so hard in highschool. Wheating is the ultimate talent, 1:45.0 in 3rd year of running.

I don't see what everyone is all excited about, come on now he was only 4th in the race. He isn't really relevant on the world stage till he can place in the top three of a big meet.
Your Typical LetsRun Poster
PS - In case you're wondering if I know what I'm talking about, I have run 4:19 for 1500m.

You suck.
Bernard Lagat ran 3:30.56 following his 1999 season at Washington State.
moron.

A bit off topic, but while obviously this guy has found the distance where he can probably contend in a major championship, I've always wanted to see a sub-3:50 miler make the leap up to the steeple. A kid as rangy, tall, and fast (fast-twitch) as Wheating could probably do some real damage there. AR damage.
Just wondering.... wrote:

Check wikipedia sir, "At the age of four, Manzano's family moved from Mexico to Flatonia, Texas. Less than a year later, the family relocated to Granite Shoals, Texas."
(He also changed Lagat to KEN and Lomong to SUD.)
I don't know whether you're outside the U.S. trying to prove something about the lack of U.S.-born talent, or from the States trying to prove something more ludicrous. Whatever the case, this is the land of opportunity, and all of these guys went to college in the States, and Lomong and Manzano weren't exactly running prospects when they came to the States. They developed as runners in the U.S. and are proud to wear red, white, and blue.
I'd hope that you're just from outside the U.S. doing some ribbing. But you've got your idea twisted. Did you missed Wheating showing the talent of the U.S.? I could understand the point if it were Khalid Khannouchi, and only kind of with Lagat (not like he was amazing when he enrolled at WSU), but the others are ridiculous. Who you choose to be is more important than where you are born (and I'm not talking just nationalities).
Seriously, guys: why begrudge great performances? Kiplagat, Wheating, Gregson.
Check out Wheating's post-race interview at
Oregon is not my tribe but hey -- look at a young guy setting a pr and having fun. How many times have you toed the line, felt like crap, and run (unexpectedly) fast? When it happens, it's the best.
I conclude that this time resulted from short shorts.
drugs.

Thanks for that! Wheating is in lane 2 almost every time you see him. He got bumped too? Are we looking at a guy who can run 3:28:xx if everything goes perfectly?
Kiplagat was fun to watch! I love how he's grimacing and thrashing his head on the final straightaway. The veterans usually look so composed, haha.

To clarify, my response was to someone saying Wheating had the fastest time as a collegiate.
Going into the season I thought Wheating had the ability to get a 3:33 lifetime best.
So for me, it's all cake from here.
I hope people don't hate on him if he never medals. (2nd fastest American born ever but only 4th in this race and Kiprop wasn't even there)
So he got out of College and started doping?
how would you like to wake up today and be Andrew Wheating? Holy cow. I am very happy for him and for American running - we have quite a lineup now:
100: 9.7
200:19.5
400: 44.5 (surprisingly weak)
800: 1:43
1500: 3:30
5000: 12:54
10000: 26:59
marathon: 2:06
Some rounding there, but there you have it. Not too shabby.
The surprisingly weak number is the only event with a recent Olympic or World Gold medal out of those listed.
